    National Kirkin' O' the Tartan

An honor to be apart of the blessing of the Tartans. My son, in blue shirt, was chosen to represent the youth in the ceremony. Bagpipes in the National Cathedral are a wonderful sound.

Am sorry for the sideways pics. Will work on my skills.

Awesome! I have visited that same cathedral before. Good stuff, mate!

Congratulations to your son. It was probably the highlight of his year so far.

Wonderful, thank you for sharing (though my neck is sore... just kidding). Your son looks great and dressed proper. It's great seeing young people like your son, participating and learning their ancestral traditions, especially here in the USA.
My wife and I hope to attend next year. We're only an hour and a half away, over the Bay Bridge on Delmarva.
    Thanks again, Kiltedjoss!

Excellent quality pictures. I like that most are candid and not posed.

    Thanks.

If you have never seen the inside of this cathedral then I really thinknthat you are missing out on something. America has so precious few monumental constructs compared to the old world. This one will go down in history as the American Notre Dame.

On first glance it is a big nod to the old European cathedrals but upon further inspection it has some very distinctly American features that give it an identity all its own.

Truly a great place to hold an event like this. Smashing, mate. Very nice indeed.

I trust you are not implying that Kirkin of the Tartans is part of scottish ancestral traditions that the OPs son was participating in and learning about.
For an excellent article on the origin of Kirkin of the Tartans, I invite you to read:

Indeed, this must be a very American tradition, and in this case you can't read North American into it. I grew up in a very Scottish Community in Canada and I never heard of this ceremony until I found this web forum a few years ago.

I have no problem with it. Community is important and if it draws people together I am sure it has positive benefits. What I find disconcerting is all the flags, flair and show. This would have met with very disapproving concern by the leaders of the Presbyterian Church I attended.
