New kilt for me by a forum member

I sent some of my Regimental weight Gordon Modern fabric to one of our members who has proven his kilt making skill. I figured since I have a 4-yard box in this fabric, and a 13 oz. knife pleat, I might as well get a cold weather 8-yarder. And hey, let’s make it a Military Box Pleat while we’re at it. So after a waiting period (this person styles himself “an occasional kilt maker”), a box arrived in the mail. I was a bit shocked when I opened it, as you might expect.

But once you get past the sewn shut Barbie-pink wrapping cloth, the objective is revealed.

He really didn’t want these pleats to get messed up in the mail. This thing was packed as well as anything I’ve ever seen.

Check out how this length of elastic is sewn across the pleats on the inside to keep them from getting tangled (which I guess can happen with the MBP)

This kilt hangs very nicely, and I’m very happy with the length (unfortunately, the camera angle doesn’t show it too well. I asked for it to be a bit shorter than I normally do). Yeah, I ought to have put shoes on, but I had just gotten home and taken them off. Call the kilt police!!

He did a great job on these pleats. The horizontal alignment is spot on. They hang perfectly straight, and the weight of the 18 oz fabric gives them a full but (to my view) understated swing. (Sorry for the slight focus problem. My son the photog)

Yet when you need to pose like this, they splay out nicely.

If an 8-yard, 16-oz kilt is a tank, this thing is a 155 mm howitzer. The workmanship is outstanding, and attention to detail is meticulous. I’d reveal the kilt maker’s identity, but if I did he’d likely get inundated with orders, causing him undue stress and making him ….

    Wait for it…

    Wait for it…

    way 2 fractious

    Thanks Richard.

Man, what a great kilt. I'm proud to be a personal acquaintance of someone who owns that kilt.

    Thanks, Turp!

Very, very nice!!! I think the elastic ribbon on the inside pleats is a cool idea considering the type of pleats. Do you know if that's a W2F idea or is it done by other makers?

    that's amazing!

I think someone mentioned the elastic on another military style kilt, where w2f got the idea.

I may be off on that though.

I've seen it on Seaforth Highlanders kilts. I don't know how far back the practice goes, or if any other regiments used the elastic band, but the Seaforth definitely did. In fact there is one in the museum you can look at that has this same type of elastic band.

Great looking kilt, now if you only had a nice looking sporran to finish off the look Maybe the rabble could suggest a source for you?

Just kidding of course, it was my pleausre to meet Turpin on my visit to Stone Mtn this year. He is a wonderful person as well as a sporran maker extrordinaire. The Gordon tartan is a great looking tartan
