    New Valamo orthodox monastery

Last week I visited the New Valamo orthodox monastery at Heinävesi, Finland. It is a very beatiful monastery area, though the weather wasn't very favourable. By the way, use of shorts and short sleeve shirts was forbidden throughout the monastery area but nobody said anything about my kilt. Knees should not have been visible but only comment from one of the monks was just "Wow! Really unusual!" Here's the monastery website: www.valamo.fi

Here's me next to a mosaic picture of the St. Sergei and St. Herman, the saints who established the original Valamo monastery which still resides next to a lake Ladoga in Russia.

Here is the whole buch next a the monastery church. On my right are my mother and her husband and on the left of me my grandparents mother side.

Nice pictures, it looks like you had a good outing, and it was probably to cold for shorts anyway.

So how long was your visit there. Did you try the over night package?

Not an overnight visit this time. But it is a really nice place to stay at summertime. I can recommmend it if you are visiting Finland, and not bad prices either.

We were just visiting, checked the museum, the church, aeted the buffet and of course visited the novelty store. They make really good wine there also. I bought a couple of bottles from their own wine store.

Super pics. Nice to hear that the kilt passed muster at the monastery.

The mosaic is stunning. I'm a sucker for that sort of thing though. And, the MacLean hunting looks great...

Great pics! Glad to hear that the Brothers were favourable toward the kilt.
