A Night At The Opera
Nigel Harrison and I enjoyed being kilted last night at opening weekend at the Santa Fe opera. We saw The Marriage of Figaro, and the outdoor venue certainly added to the ambiance.

Nigel is with his wife Marlene, and I with my wife Maggie.
Nigel is wearing his "Land of Enchantment" tartan, designed by Kathy Lare of Kathy's Kilts, and I my Ancient Hunting MacDuff.
My sporran looks a bit askew and a tad low. Will need to work on that!
And no, I am not wearing a clergy collar, its just my silver Bolo tie not showing up well in the photo.
Si Deus, quis contra? Spence and Brown on my mother's side, Johnston from my father, proud member of Clan MacDuff!

It's the champagne - it always makes a sporran tipsy .
Looking good - as always.

Gordon: Nice pictures. Thanks for posting. Did you get wet? That's a very handsome outfit - perfect for the opera. I really like the southwestern accent provided by the Bolo tie. Nice touch.
I'm surprised you weren't featured in the Journal North section of the Albuquerque Journal. They always do an opening night story with pics. Or, was the opening on Friday night? I'm supposed to renew my subscription this month, so I'll be sure to complain that they didn't feature the great looking guys in Scottish kilts.
The opera is a little too high brow for me. My idea of "classical music" is Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Maybe we could meet up sometime next door at the Santa Fe Flea Market.
John
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

hope you had fun. I love singing marriage. I have sung all the bass and baritone roles in at one time or another.

A what a magical place. And they do a great Figaro. When I saw it there many years ago the moon was setting through the open back of the stage during the final scheme in the garden.

Yes John, Opening Night was Friday, and we were lucky that we went on Saturday since all of the tailgaters got rained out on Friday.
Its fun to do highbrow now and then, especially kilted! My wife stopped counting at 43 women who checked me out, and I guarantee that they were all significantly more highbrow than I.
Grizz, you have my respect and admiration!
qwynng, you must have had waaaay better seats than us. I have been able to see the moon at other performances but we were in the nosebleeds for this performance, at almost $300 per couple!

I've worn a kilt a few times to the opera, one to the Royal Opera and another to Philip Glass - Einstein on the Beach. The latter I was like, why did I bother? Since partner forgot and everyone else was dressed down in casual - even though it was a big event (first time that opera had been performed here in 20 years)...standards are slipping!

(Didn't take the picture, hence him missing most of the kilt..>DOH. Does show the vintage Conneticut (?) 1860's silk waistcoat, though...I LOVE Silk Brocade. Opera was Rameau - Castor & Pollux btw)

I can remember when at the end of any opera at Covent Garden, the prima donna was presented with a bouquet by a flunky in a wig. Not any more.
I wore my kilt last night to Gloriana and last month to La donna del largo in which the entire male chorus was kilted and Juan Diego Florez was in Royal Stewart tartan kilt at the end to recall George IV's visit to Scotland (although he was upstaged by Joyce Denato's singing). I was probably the most overdressed man in the auditorium, but what the hell.
