    Nothing, absolutely nothing...

to do with kilts, but I thought I'd share some pictures of the incredible beauty of the Canadian Rockies I took when we went back to visit our son in Calgary over Christmas.

Looking west from Calgary towards the Rockies. It has always impressed me that the surveyors for the CPR looked at these mountains and said 'yup, we can put a railway through there'.

Mountains called the Three Sisters just outside the town of Canmore.

Looking down the main street in Banff, which was developed as a resort by the CPR for their well-heeled clients.

Interesting looking mountain just west of Banff.

One of a number of wildlife overpasses that funnel elk and sheep over the highway along their migratory routes.

    ...more to come...

Those are beautiful. I hope to go there someday.

Would you mind posting the pics a little bigger? Big country needs big pictures.

    Just outside of Lake Louise

The little town of Field, which at one time was a a bustling railway town. Just east of here are two spiral tunnels carved into the mountains about 100 years ago to reduce a grade of 4.5% down to a more manageable 2.2%(which is still pretty significant). Being at the bottom of the 'Big Hill' Field was the scene of some spectacular wrecks when a train's brakes failed.

The moon peeking out in the Rogers Pass.

Last picture in Rogers Pass, which was opened back in the early 60's to eliminate a treacherous route through unhospitable country. At the time the highway through the pass was considered an engineering marvel.

It's not often we get weather this beautiful when travelling through the Rockies...the temp was around -15C and the roads were mostly clear. Made for a very enjoyable trip.

I'm feeling pretty lucky just getting the pictures to show up...they definitely need to be bigger but I don't know how to do that. Any help will be gratefully accepted.

In your album in Photobucket, under "Recent Uploads", click on one of the pictures. It should open much bigger than the others, and there should be a percentage in the upper left corner (mine say 68%). Copy the IMG Code, and then paste it into your thread here. It should appear here the same size as it does in Photobucket.

I hope this helps, and thanks for posting these shots from your vacation.

Great photos. Thanks for posting them.

It's been 40 years since I traveled through Calgary (was there for the stampede) and Banff. Stayed at that beautiful hotel on Lake Louise (can't remember the name of name of it now.)

Wow, fabulous shots. I've stopped over at Calgary Airport and I've seen the Rockies from the air, but it must be wonderful to actually be there on the ground. Thanks for sharing those magnificent views.
