An Ocean of Sage

Put in ten hours driving home today. Where else, other than Southern Nevada, can you see a sign that says, "Next Gas 163 miles"...?

Its an ocean of sage...long long highways.



This pic was just west of the Queen City Summit - about 20 miles west of Rachel, Nevada on the Extraterrestrial Highway. Its also near Area 51 and there are many "Low Flying Planes" signs. Just after this pic a fighter streaked by at very low altitude. Silver, looked like a cigar with stubby little wings. Sort of half barrel rolled over the summit and disappeared.

Gassed up and had lunch in Caliente, Nevada. Talk about an isolated town! Anyhow, at the gas station a 12 year old boy all tricked out in his Hip-Hop look got wide eyed and was very taken with my kilt. His grunge look father started yammering away about how their famiy had a tartan. Gave him a couple of kilt cards and went to lunch. In the diner an elderly couple came in and I heard him say to her in a corrective tone, "Its a kilt." Then leaving a lady about my age was coming in and she just lit up and said, "I love a man in a kilt!" Who'd have thunk it in a tiny, remote, Nevada town?

Back across the line in Utah I stopped at Mountain Meadows again. On the way out it'd been raining too hard to get any pictures. I'm reading a book about the "incident" there in 1857. There's a lot being written now and the book I'm reading is new and probably the most comprehensive and fair to all three sides. I don't want to drift into controversy or religion so lets just say its a pretty spot and as historic as any battlefield.

And, here's a pic of the memorial monument at the burial site. There's been a memorial on this spot since shortly after the "incident" when U.S. Cavalry arrived and collected and buried the remains of the dead. The memorial has grown progressively ever since. This is its current incarnation.

Did some shopping in St. George, Utah - always a treat for us small town folks to get to the big city. Whole trip was over 1,500 miles. A long way for an olde man but dang...driving kilted sure makes it more comfy.
