    piping at Fort MacArthur 2016

It's time for the annual Fort MacArthur Days post.

It's a weekend of military history, vintage military vehicles (including a Sherman tank), and re-enactors of every sort.

I wore my uniform from the 1st Black Watch, 51st (Highland) Division, WWII.

Piping in front of a very useful vehicle. Yes it runs fine, the owner says.

My pipes are of WWII vintage, the plain Starck pipes often seen in WWII photos.

Nice to see a Universal Carrier, AKA bren gun carrier(first picture), I haven't seen one in years. Purely out of interest, did the members of the Black Watch band not have a red hackle on their bonnet? Was it a wartime thing not to have one? Just a band thing? Just wondering as I have to admit that I have never noticed before!

Hi Jock, the Red Hackle thing is tricky, and something people doing Black Watch uniforms often get wrong.

In the Tam O'Shanter the Black Watch wore a red hackle with no cap badge, the red hackle being deemed sufficient.

In the Glengarry the regimental cap badge was worn without hackle. (Also the Black Watch Glengarries had no cockade; the badge is mounted directly on the wool of the hat.)

When sun helmets were worn it was as for the TOS, hackle, no badge.

Only with the Feather Bonnet was cap badge and hackle worn together, as far as I know.

Yet I see people wearing the hackle on the Glengarry all the time.

Here ya go, members of The Black Watch c1980

Here's some members in the post-WWII era wearing TOS with hackle no badge

BTW you can see that I put on my hose-tops wrongly. When I put them on I put the seam in the middle of the back, but that makes the centre front black/red/black when it should be red/black/red. Oops!
