    Piping at Sea

Saturday I piped for the scattering of ashes at sea for Gloria Boyar.

Here is our boat, the Clemente, preparing for us to board. It is at Dana Point as you might see.

Once we got in the open water it got a bit rough, and the only way I could pipe was to have this wide stance on a rubber mat and lean against the side. The sun was brutal hence the hat.

I was surprised to see a Disneyland co-worker on the boat! She used to work in our department but transferred a couple years ago, I only see her occasionally at work.

It is truly amazing how much consolation piping provides to people at times like this. I was at a Jewish funeral on Sunday for a good friend's mother and was surprised and delighted when the Rabbi announced that one of the deceased's last wishes was for a piper. He played a tune I was not familiar with called "When the Piper Plays". One of the lyrics is this:

The pipes get played, for you and me
They kept on saying, we’ll soon be free
And your soul, will never fade away
You live forever, when the piper’s play

How appropriate for a memorial service. My only regret is that I didn't expect it and did not wear my kilt. Had I known I would have. I had worn it to her grandson's Bar Mitzvah and was very well received.

Well done with the balancing act.

It may interest you that the tune is an old folk-song The Water Is Wide or O Waly Waly which dates at least to the 17th century.

As a hymn tune O WALY WALY (in hymnody it is customary to write the tune name in all caps) is used for a number of hymns

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross

When God Almighty came to Earth

An Upper Room did our Lord Prepare

    The Gift of Love

    Thou Gracious God

I think When The Pipers Play is a recent song, sung to the tune O WALY WALY.

Here is O WALY WALY being performed first on the Northumbrian Smallpipes, then with military massed pipes & drums

I've played for a few Jewish funerals over the years. A Rabbi told me that traditionally there is no music, so having a piper or any other sort of music is unusual and would probably be at the request of the deceased.

When I have, I play Jewish music, unless requested otherwise.

Jerusalem Of Gold ( ירושלים של זהב‎, Yerushalayim Shel Zahav) goes very well on the pipes. I don't have a recording of me playing it on the pipes but here it is being sung, such a beautiful song.
