Pix of Montreat Pipes & Drums Band @ Kennedy Center, Wash. D.C. 2011

Yesterday, I meet up with XMarker Tartan Hiker (Bill Sanderson) to hear the Montreat (NC) Pipes & Drums Band at the Kennedy Center. Their performance was part of the week long celebration of Tartan Day by the National Capitol Tartan Day Committee.

Bill is Emcee for the evening

    Ed Miller & EJ Jones

Bill’s son Connell, who is also the piper for the Celtic rock band, Uncle Hamish and the Hooligans

L to R: Joseph Bailey, Connell Sanderson, Bill Sanderson, MC

Now for a real treat click here and listen to the recorded program. Be sure to hear my favorite the band’s rendition of Dougie Maclean’s The Gael.

Fantastic! Great to see Ed Miller there, as well. He's definitely one of my favorite folk singers. Wish I could have been there for what appears to have been a fantastic concert!

Aye, Matt! Ed is in my top five favorite Scottish folk singers as well. I had the pleasure of working with Ed at a Burns Supper in Eureka Springs, Arkansas several years ago.

It's nice to see my neighbors all dressed up and playing pretty. Thanks for the pics, Ern.

Great photos Ern. Thanks for sharing. I wish I could have made the event, but previous commitments had my weekend tied up. Were you all able to partake of the pubs afterwards?

Yes indeed, we hit a great pub afterwards (don't remember the name, it was in Georgetown). Only Ern, my son and myself repping the XMTS group, but a couple of friends of mine from Montreat, their daughter, and a friend of hers attended the concert as well and met us at the pub. A good time was had by all.

    Ed Miller in Austin

Those of us in Austin are lucky to have Ed Miller here most of the year as a DJ for the local PBS station KUT. He has a show on Sunday that can be heard live on the internet.

"Across the Water" features the folk music of Scotland, Ireland and England along with its connections to music in this country. We passed our first anniversary in March, and it's always indeed heart-warming to receive so many calls from listeners welcoming a new, mainly- Celtic show. The show often has themes, from "the Irish Experience in America," and "The songs of Brian McNeill," to "songs about birds" or "Transatlantic Connections - song versions from both sides of the ocean."
Like all other KUT shows, "Across the Water" can be heard online at KUT.org - click on Listen Live. I'm sorry; but for copyright reasons, the show will not be archived for later listening. However, I do have all the shows on CD; so if you are desperate to hear a particular issue, contact me.
