Outstanding photos!
Is the one gentlemen in the colour party wearing the 7th US Cavalry tartan?
It's been far too long since I was aboard Jeremiah O'Brien. Every time I read and/or watch "Mister Roberts" I think of her, especially Heggen's descriptions of SF.
Fair winds,

We had the great pleasure of being Sailortats guest on the memorial cruise yesterday, and we had an absolutely wonderful time! The weather was absolutely perfect, clear, sunny, with a bit of breeze, and we couldn't have asked for a better, or more well informed host. Thanks so much Phil !
Here are a few photos from the day:
This is one of the famous, and former, Alcatraz Federal Prison which is located on an island in the San Francisco bay. The blooming ice plant around the embankment is a bit of a contrast to the less than beautiful experience of spending time there.

Due to the age of the ship and it's engines, the Coast Guard requires that the ship have a tug escort throughout the journey. Apparently, the thought of having 700 souls stranded in the middle of San Francisco bay is a bit uncomfortable for them

Heading out under that famous span The Golden Gate Bridge:

I thought it was thoughtful of Daelin to wear a tartan that coordinated so well with the famous structure:

Day on the bay
Here is one of a teenager preparing to do what they do best!

Having made a bit of a loop, we are now heading under the Bay Bridge. This bridge spans in the east/west direction of the bay vs. the Golden Gates north/south orientation across the mouth of the bay.

Going back past the famous Fishermans Wharf (and dock for this ship) with the financial district in the background.

More to come!

Another of the "City by the Bay"

As I mentioned, it was a bit breezy, but in a very pleasant way. Here are some other sailors (some may even have had Tats) taking advantage of the day:

Here, a whole fleet of the little devils came zipping by the ship!

Did I mention it was a bit breezy??

It was a GREAT day with fine friends and family!:

Thanks again Phil, it was great!
Cheers,
Brooke, Connie, and Daelin

Terrific pictures. Brings back a couple of great memories for me - last year my wife and I were in SF as part of our silver wedding anniversary present to ourselves, a California road trip. What a city! In 1994 I was working as a Customs Officer in Southampton, UK. I boarded the US warship and the liberty ship that docked and were over for the D Day 50th anniversary. I'm sure the liberty ship was the Jeremiah O'Brien. Perhaps someone could confirm this for me?

Thank you for the terrific photos. Takes me back to happy times on the Bay. I've only been over the famous bridge a few times; been under it more than I can count. Happy sailing.

StevieR, you are 100% correct. The SS Jeremiah O'Brien did go back to Normandy for the 50th anniversary. The only major ship to return to the beaches for the anniversary. O'Brien made 11 trips between England and Utah and Omaha beaches during the Normandy invasion, carrying troops and supplies. She did stop in Southampton while over there as that was where she picked up the supplies to take across the channel to Normandy. I am pleased that you were able to go aboard while she was there.
