Scott's first kilt
OK...here is my first attempt at kilt making.
I used a cotton duck material I got at Walmart for about $4/yd.
I used velcro for the under apron closure. 3 heavy duty snaps for the over.
The belt is a BlackHawk tactical utility belt.
I added six 2.5" beltloops. I centered a box pleat in the back, and then I could have all the knife pleats facing toward the back. I added a back pocket, also.
Be gentle, I have only seen them in pictures. I have never held one in my hand.
All in all, it was a fun project to do. My next will be a digital camo.

Not being a Kiltmaker, seamstress, tailor, or one who can barely sew on buttons, I must say that looks great. I admire your ability.

That's one very smart looking kilt; you must be very skilful.
Welcome to the forum, Scott.

Great first effort - it looks very sharp indeed! Am I right in thinking this is a reverse kingussie style pleating?
Now for a comment - if I'm seeing things right on my monitor. It looks like the sewn down portion of the pleats have no taper from waist to hip. Next time you might consider spreading the difference between waist and hip measurement across all the pleats to keep the back center pleat from looking quite so "dart" like.
Hey I'm no expert - but I know there are plenty here who will be glad to jump in and provide some more valuable insight.
Again - great first effort!

I'd echo PDCorlis on this, but still and all, a good looking kilt. Well done!

Thanks for the kind words.
The GallowHill name did come from somewhere in Scotland, but I can't remember where. I came across it years ago and adopted it for my website and username.

Thanks for the comments. Any constructive criticism is accepted. I have a sewing book, and in it is an article by a kiltmaker named Ann Stewart. She only writes about inserting 4 darts, not tapering each pleat. But then she is instructing about a real kilt. So that is where I got the darts.
Tapering each pleat will be the way I do it next time, just as you suggest. But to be honest, I ripped out and resewed the pleats so many times, I just wanted to be done with them.
I am new at this, so I must confess I do not know what a reverse kingussie style pleating is. Did I do it and not even know it?

More or less - yup. A kingussie style pleat has a box pleat at the back and the pleats sweep forward on both sides - a reverse kingussie is well the reverse of that. Now I've only seen a few kingussie kilt photos on the web - so I'm a bit fuzzy on the box pleat detail at the back - but I bet Matt Newsome, Barb T, or some other well versed member can provide loads more information.
