serenade to lovat blue kilt hose
Gentlemen and dudes,
I am intending for this picture collection to be an encouragement to those thinking about branching out from white/cream/ecru hose into the wide wild world of colored hose.
As a jeans/ Carharts/ camo guy from just before my kilted days began, I find lovat blue hose "go" with almost everything I own. Indeed if I have chosen a shirt, or a tie, or even both and my wife says, "are you going kilted today?" invariably my first thought is "this shirt and tie will work just fine with lovat blue hose." The greater challenge for me now is choosing a color of hose other than lovat blue, just for the sport of it.
Please do add pictures of your own, I don't have, for instance, a red kilt at all and I know lovat blue hose work great with red kilts. Likewise my looks tend to the more casual end of the accepted spectrum, certainly please do feel free to elevate lovat blue hose to dressy day wear and smart day wear and so forth.
Also, if you would care to start a similar thread about some other hose color, I humbly ask that you inculde the word serenade in the thread title for the convenience of future search button users.
Without further ado:
When I ordered my first tank I had a thread about hose colors, and read lots of other threads about hose colors and took a flier on having a pair of lovat blue hose without having any idea how they were really going to work for me. I took the rabble's word for it so to speak. This is the first picture ever of me in my then new tank:

EDIT: these are actually "ancient blue" hose from the House of Cheviot Lewis line, it is close enough to the same darn color as lovat blue.

This one is from just a couple weeks ago, Alan's "action pic" thread.
Again a very simple look, but presentable and attainable without being ostentatious or overtly sophisticated.

Re: serenade to lovat blue kilt hose
This image is actually the genesis of this thread idea for me. I had been reading up a lot, cold weather = internet time for me. While the ordinary tone here is gentle and encouraging, I hereby accept Steve's challenge to provide pictures instead of reams of text.
This is another very simple kilted look that I think looks fine. It is also easy. Besides my tank I am wearing a homemade sporran, $27 "standard" hose in lovat blue from the Scottish Tartans Museum, a black T-shirt that came to me free over the glass at a hockey game, a very common solid navy blue sweater (already in my closet), black shoes; and bright red garter ties, also from STM, I think $24 and not actually required to pull off this look.
Would this look "better" or "erudite" if I added a contrasting collared shirt and third color tie? Likely, yes. Would it be less accessible to folks looking to buy their first pair of hose in a color other than ecru? Likely, yes.
I received, in my tiny very pragmatic hometown, more compliments in just a few hours as pictured than I have received in the last year occasionaly kilted. Non-kilted Americans can relate to this:

How about Lovat Blue hose and jacket

The OP asked about Lovat blue hose with a red based tartan, I think it can work depending on the tartan, I think it works below as the Carolina tartan has some lovat blue in it

Re: serenade to lovat blue kilt hose
Neat idea.
Lovat blue hose with the Carolina tartan, modern colors, worn at a Burns Supper in 2007.

Lovat blue hose with the Armstrong tartan, reproduction (weathered) colors. (The hose look kind of grey in this photo, but they really are lovat blue - same hose in the first pic, actually).

Here is that same kilt worn with a different pair of lovat blue hose.

These hose are some of the "Border Check" hose from House of Cheviot. I actually wear them quite often with this particular kilt these days. They have a very subtle check pattern at the top. Here's a close up.

Just a reminder, and not a thread hijack, I have 4 pairs of Gaelic Themes kilt hose in Lovat blue, left for sale. Practically brand new for $15 a pair! See the 'for sale' section.

Re: serenade to lovat blue kilt hose
I am a big fan of lovat blue. It's a really unusual color to see in nature or in other clothing.
Here I am at the end of a long day at Loon Mt. during the NH Scottish Games. It's not a great pic but it shows off the lovat blue hose I was wearing...
