some pics from a 40s weekend !
I was invited down to the North of England to a 40s R-enactment, by some friends to play the pipes I topped my normal daywear with diced Glengarry for effect. the costumes are very accurate and I had a great time, I played at the stations and the villages and was made very welcome its a great way for young people to learn about the war.

"VE HAF VAYS OF MAKING YOU PIPE !!" here I am with the SS,
can you believe that some people wanted the germans banned from the event as it may cause offence!!! The local Rabbi stepped in and defended the re- enactors saying that young people should learn about WW2 and learn the lessons of history. the compromise was no Swastika armbands

heres a steam train there were loads of different ones, one was called the
"Leander" the other "the fusileer" I think this was the "Princess elizabeth" big load and noisy (bit like me) Alec might be able to tell us more

the rain came and the Inverness cape came out- this is at Ramsbottom (really!!) station in Lancashire Iw as treated like a superstar by the people there!!!

Nice shots, it amazes me that people would ask for no Geremans at a WWII re- enactment.

I must admit its quite unnerving to see a battallion of German soldiers marching down a high street in the North of England, my camera went flat which is a shame becasue there was a lot of WW2 vehicles and some amazing costumes there. the northern folk always make people very welcome and the pipes are always a source of fascination, Thomas Rawlinson came from that part of England (hes credited by some people with "inventing" the wee kilt)
heres a link to a froum with some other pics from the same event, people were shooting pics of me playing all the time no doubt some will turn up on the net at some stage

Excellent pics, Daz. The Princess Elizabeth sometimes goes out on the main line and I have travelled behind her from Carlisle. Looks like you had an enjoyable time on the East Lancashire Railway; its a couple of years since I've been on that one. Most of the heritage/tourist railways in the north of England now hold an annual forties weekend - I went to the Tanfield Railway's event last year. This coming weekend War in Weardale is on at Stanhope but I don't think I'll make it as our local Highland Games are this Saturday. It is quite common to see kilted Black Watch re-enactors at these events as there are a group of them based in the north-east of England.

the power in those trains is awesome at one stage it shot a load of steam out from somewhere and the noise was deafening, its great to be among people who are so enthusiastic about things (like us really!!) the next Highland games im attending is Perth in August.

Removing the German forces would not be proper, though it is not a history we wish to glamorize, we need to remember. Ignoring their existence does nothing to understand the folly of the corruptive nature that power can have on some people.
To be "politically correct" and ignore what has happened in history does not help anyone, even though it may offend. Some things are offensive that bear remembering.
The re-enactment pics look great, as do you.
Thanks for sharing them with all of us.

Thanks for the fine pics, Daz. Your clothes look really nice, and it's almost spooky to see you a "prisoner" of the SS! And that spookiness is the very reason why the Germans the the swastikas should not be banned!
I'm offended by people who are so easily offended! What about me? What about my needs?
