Hi all, Just did my 2 weeks a year thing in Yokosuka. A couple hours south of Tokyo. Was aboard the USS George Washington. I did an exercise so I had a watch everyday so it limited my time to go on tours. It was only 6 hours each day so it was hardly a strain but it didn't allow for trips out and about. Also my "battle buddy" is the one who relieved me on watch so I wasn't able to go out on town much. A lone sailor wandering around is kind of asking for trouble. Also add on to that my companions lacked adventure when it comes to food. About the only thing I got was a bowl of miso ramen. He thought he was brave eating beef ramen. A couple pics from around - Love their vending machines - Really love - The guys had to stop for some food. They went here thinking it was their last chance at American food. Like I said, no adventure - And people around here complain about sorting out recyclables - The big girl, USS George Washington - One of the many monuments on the base - Really -
This is one of the places I got dragged to. Really, an Irish pub? Not like I don't like a good Scotch (had a shot of Laphroaig 10 year) but we were in Japan! The ramen shop off base. Good miso ramen - Some souvenirs for Amy. She collects fans - Did get another shot at some ramen at the airport. This one was way bland. Didn't quite get the name but not miso - Some pot stickers, gyoza in Japan - When they said a bowl of rice as a side I didn't think it would be "pimped" out! Has fish, onions and nori - Picked myself up a little something - And of course couldn't pass this up - Jim

How cool! Do you do your 2 weeks in the same place every year, or are you assigned to the GW and go wherever she goes? I love the far east--it's like visiting a whole different country! Have you tried the malt yet? When you do, please provide some tasting notes. I've been wanting to try some, but could never bring myself to pull the trigger. Thank you for your service. It's nice to see that you get some compensation!
Mister McGoo A Kilted Lebowski--Taking it easy so you don't have to.
i spent a month in japan back in 1989 visiting a girlfriend who taught english with the JET program. the impression of the japanese being familiar yet alien has not changed much over the years. oddly enough, the best curry i ever had was in fukuoka. i wish we had whiskey vending machines. it is amazing what you can get out of a vending machine in japan.
Well done! Maybe next time they'll give you a bit more opportunity to come to my neck of the woods! But it looks like you made the most of your brief stay. JD

JD That was the biggest bummer. I am planning to head back out in Aug but that time will probably be all sea time. I should always be heading to the Washington so hopefully I will be able to make it work at least once. Jim
