A Visit to the Peoples Palace
Last week I visited the Peoples Palace in the east end of Glasgow, here are some pics
In nearby Argyll Street, this young piper was busking away

Nelsons Column on Glasgow Green, the weather was not too good but hopefully it will be better in August when the Worlds is held here on the Green

this entrance plaque on the ground commemorates the famous mouser that once patrolled the corridors of the palace

The magnificent terracota Doulton Fountain in the foreground of the palace commemorating all corners of the globe where Victoria had her empire

The welcoming slab on the ground at the front entrance to the palace

The plaque giving info about the Doulton Fountain

Outside view of the Palace

Billy Connolly's big banana boots that he first wore in an Aberdeen theatre in 1978, Connolly would probably cringe now at this stage of his career when he wore such footwear!
A portrait of the late great Jimmy Reid for his 75th birthday
the leader and spokesman of the Upper Clyde Shipbuilders successful work-in in 1971
The painting by Barry Atherton contains many items and people who were part of Reid's life from the ordinary working man whom he never left to meeting with Presidents like Gorbachev and Bush. Reid is revered in Scotland

Re: A Visit to the Peoples Palace
Awesome pictures, thank you! I'm considering studying in Glasgow (or Edinburgh) in a year, so I love to see some pictures from a resident's perspective.

Great photos, thanks Jimmy!
The posture of the piper seems a wee bit 'off' to me (the bag may need to be pushed farther back in between his body and arm), perhaps it was just a unusual moment for him, or he may have been about to finish a tune? All the while, caught in time by your camera.

Great pics, Jimmy of something I knew nothing about. I will have to do some investigation now.

Re: A Visit to the Peoples Palace
I agree, Kyle. Something's a bit off with the piper's positioning of the bag & drones. It's an awkward position, as it puts a lot of the bag under his left forearm, which will eventually cause the hand to fatigue due to the pressure of holding the bag in that position. It could be he was in the process of cutting off the tune, but if so, why is he still blowing into the bag? Maybe he's trying to reflect the sound of the drones off the glass behind him for a bigger sound?
Looks like his finger positioning is a bit off on his right (lower) hand as well. Hard to tell, but it looks like his right thumb is almost directly behind his right index finger, indicating either a self-taught, or newer player. Most players I know have been taught to put their thumb behind their middle & ring fingers. This makes for a lighter touch and faster embellishments.
Jimmy, these are great pics of some sights not often seen around Glasgow. Thanks for posting them.

Great pics, it is interesting to see Glasgow Green at a quieter time (I was back there last summer crewing the buses to and from the Glasgow Fair in July and again for the World's Pipe Bands Championships in August, both times the Green was crowded with people).

Great pictures! I love Glasgow. As far as the piper... LOL.. So yeah his playing posture is certainly not quite right.. Middle tenor drone is to far apart from the base and yes the pipe bag is to far forward on the arm.. Could be that his blow pipe is too short. That is often the cause.
But sadly tourist spots all over Scotland are brimming with dreadful pipers! And it's these guys that make people hate the pipes! Out of tune, no sense of tempo, horrid figuring.
It is quite sad..

Agreed to a certain extent, but atleast they are 'out there,' I suppose we gotta give them that?!
Cheers!
