    Way Tooo Early Spring Fishing

My youngest son Quinn surprised me for my B-day and came out to Colorado to visit. We spent one day fishing up on the Frying Pan River but it was a tad early in the season. Both of us caught fish but when we started the day it was 42F and eventually ended up down to 33F. Our line was freezing to our rods and we could no longer feel the tippet when we were changing flies. So we headed home. As we always say "A bad day on the river is a lot better than a good day at work". We really enjoyed ourselves and our fingers eventually thawed.

We had just pulled off the river and were ready to head home.

Well done! Great surroundings, to be in. You are doing me no good at all! I am off to wet a line at the end of the week and whilst it won't be that cold(I hope!), it will be a month too early. But I just can't wait.

You know that's it's bad when you're dreaming of fishing...and I've been doing that for the past few weeks. The fly rods may have to stay put for a while but I do have a nice ultra-light spinning rod that may see action very soon.

Sadly, the smelt fishing season will begin shortly but it's been characterized by an acute lack of smelt for the past twenty-odd years. It was always more of a social event than a sporting one...dropping gill nets into Lake Michigan at night, get a little fire going in a handy trash can for warmth and pop a few brews to kill time between net checks. Used to be way good times but the cycle of the Lake has turned against us.

But...Southeast Minnesota and the trout up there are calling to me....starting to sort out the gear for a bit of that.

I am jealous of your having been out already this year! Even having conditions so cold that you couldn't feel the tippet sounds good to me. I hope you have many more chances to get out on the rivers this year.

Just to get you thinking about better weather and to get that fly line cleaned before the first day out here are some pix of better times:

Beautiful fish! I try to get out your direction one time per year but most recently I made it to Missoula, Montana. Incredible fishing pretty much any where in your part of the country...and here I am stuck in Ohio!
