Weight loss and "moms kilt". Today's a big day.
This is a Big Deal in capital letters in my weight loss journey.
When my mother-in-law was in her last week, before she died, Joan and I spent most of that week at her families house in Livermore. I had purchased this cloth some time earlier. I spent a large part of the week set up on a card table in the living room, sewing this kilt together from thread, interfacing, lining and so on from "Mom's sewing stash". I used her sewing machine to sew down the waistband. I actually did a really good job on this kilt. It's pleated to sett.
I haven't been able to wear it for 3+ years because I just got too fat. Today is the first day I have "Mom's Kilt" back on. I've lost about 2-2 1/2 inches from my spare tire. For this kilt to fit perfectly, I'll need to lose another inch, but it looks just fine, now.
This is one of my goals for weight loss.....to fit into "Moms Kilt" again. YAY, me!
BTW, my mother-in-law was *the best*. Some people can't stand their in-laws. I was lucky. I really liked my father-in-law and my mother-in-law was just a wonderful, funny, artistic, kind and amazing person. She loved the out-of-doors and the natural world, as well as being a first rate artist, specializing in ceramics and silkscreen printing. Not a week goes by that I don't think of her. Whenever I see some new beautiful thing....a beautiful lake while we're backpacking, a new bird, a cool insect, elephant seals hauled out on the beach... well, the Luminous Joan and I have a saying, when we see something wonderful like that. We say...
"Mom would have loved that"....
I'm really glad I can wear this kilt, again.

it's a bit on the long side. At the time, I was practicing for the Games with a fellow who had a really nice County Cork tartan kilt that was a bit long. I liked the look, so when I made this I made it to hit the bottom of my knee. As I look at it now, I think it's a bit too long, but what the heck. Not gonna change it.

Congratulations for so many things. 1) Congratulations on your weight loss. I fully understand how difficult that can be and satisfying when you meet your goal. 2) Congratulations on the kilt. It looks great. And your pride that you made it yourself makes it even better. And 3) congratulations on have such fantastic in-laws. So many people are not that blessed. My dad's mother was a sweet lady. But, I sometimes think that she liked her daughter in law more than her son. LOL-- But congratulations to you again.

Mind y'all...I'm not done. I started this weighing about 304. This morning the scale said 285.8. With luck I'll crack the 285 "barrier" tomorrow AM, or soon thereafter. I've been having a weight loss competition with a friend and it ends tomorrow. Our goal was 20 pounds lost, and I started the competition when I weighed 300. I won't get down to 280, so Hadi (his name is Hadi) will probably win. However, getting into Moms Kilt again is a Big WIN.
Getting into Moms Kilt is only one of the goals. The big goal is to see 265 or less on the scale before the end of 2015. 260 would be *great*, then I would have lost the equivalent of my backpack.
Then I can make the Scottish Wildcat Tartan kilt to my NEW measurements and wear it to Burns Night.

Congratulations! It's a continuous journey for all of us, but a worthwhile one at that.
