World Pipe Band Championships Glasgow 2012.

At the Worlds in Glasgow by cessna152towser, on Flickr
Yesterday we went to the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow. The weather was ideal and the pipe bands and associated Highland Games were very well attended.

The sheaf toss ended on 25 feet but the men's weight for distance ended with a new field record, with 90 feet exceeded for the first time at Glasgow.

The Atlas Stones by cessna152towser, on Flickr
The objective in the Atlas Stones is to lift stones weighing 90kg, 100kg, 110kg and 120kg onto whisky barrels in the shortest possible time.

Each member of the three man team has to lift the stones individually but team members can assist in preventing the stone rolling off the barrel.

    Thanks for posting Alex.
I believe that yet again a band from Ireland has won - Field Marshall Montgomery from Norn Iron.

Watching the Band by cessna152towser, on Flickr
A highlight for Gabrielle and Martina was the Odenwald Pipes and Drums. The band wears the MacLeod of Harris tartan. Odenwald in Germany is twinned with Falkirk in central Scotland.

Final Tuning Up by cessna152towser, on Flickr
Odenwald Pipes and Drums reached the Grade 4b finals where they finished sixth. Here they have a final tune up prior to their performance in the Grade 4b finals.

A superb setting for the Grade 4b finals, with the Templeton Business Centre in the background. Originally designed as a carpet factory by architect William Leiper and completed in 1889, the building has an Italian Venetian inspiration and is known locally as The Doge's Palace.

The People's Palace by cessna152towser, on Flickr
All too soon it was time to go home and we conclude with The People's Palace in the background of this view. The People's Palace is a winter garden and museum, completed in 1898. A craft fair is held in the winter garden in conjunction with the pipe band championships.

Wow great photos and thanks so much for posting them! Love your Spirit of Scotland kilt!

I couldn't make it this year... I went in 2004 and 2007 but it's so expensive unless a band is paying for half of it...

What's great about so many of your photos is that they show that the traditional full-yardage handsewn kilts are alive and well in the Pipe Band scene. Just look at all those lovely pleats!

Since our band didn't go this year, we had a Worlds Viewing Party at the local British & Dominion Club, to watch the BBC live streaming of the Grade One Qualifier and Finals, rigged up on a big-screen TV and tall speakers.

Due to the time difference the live streaming began at 1am our time, finishing around 9:30am, making it an all-nighter for us here.

We were cheering on our local lads The LA Scots who made it through the qualifying round (3rd place) but didn't do as well in the Finals.
