.................and some of us obsess about getting our kilt dirty! Before that war had finished the wool kilt was going to see much worse than that shown in the picture and survived! As it did in many wars before.

Ah yes, but then the Germans never realised that the Highlanders were Scottish and not English.

Like many from outwith the UK, they forgot to bone up on the make up of the UK. One of the many mistakes foreign belligerents, in particular, often made and probably still do!

The best single explanation you'll ever find of how the U.K. is comprised, is this:

Taken from this youtube video, below, which has been circulated around here before. Since the narrator speaks quickly, I just keep the above screenshot handy.

No I haven't seen that pic!
A bit hopeful, for the Germans, that photo... I don't think they often saw the back sides of Highlanders!
It's a puzzle, as to what regiment it is. Obviously not the Royal Scots (who didn't wear kilts).
The combination of diced Glengarries, Government kilts, non-black spats buttons, and dark hosetops rule out the five Scottish kilted Highland regiments. Unless they're Gordon Highlanders with khaki spats, and we can't see the yellow line in the kilt.
Of course there were a number of Territorial battalions, and Dominions regiments, the uniforms of which often didn't fit into the usually seen things.
For comparison here are a couple Gordon Highlanders of that period

Another battalion which comes to mind is the 5th Battalion The Seaforth Highlanders, who wore the Sutherland (Black Watch or Government) tartan

Wow that's complicated. How on earth does one keep all of the Commonwealth and Territories straight?
One time out at a gig I was surprised by the knowledge of a High School kid. I had my pipe case slung over my shoulder

And a kid asked "what is that flag?" and the other kid says "Hawai'i".
The first kid says "why does it have the British flag on it?" and the other kid says "that's the flag of The United Kingdom, not Britain".
"What's the difference?" "One includes Northern Ireland, the other doesn't."
I wonder how many American High School kids know that stuff.

If you think that's complicated, most Americans need to see just how complicated the U.S. actually is...
