I don't think that I have seen a TV commercial, advert of any sort, or, newspaper article(I don't read the Scotsman!) about any of this. Perhaps they don't want the locals?

They don't seem to want the Clan societies either. My clan society had planned to bring a large contingent over from the USA for the gathering but they are now planning to tour Ireland instead.
Homecoming Scotland 2009 got off to a good start with the Burns 250 events in Dumfries which some of us attended, and similar events also took place the same weekend in Ayr and Glasgow. There is an interesting programme of events planned for all over Scotland throughout the year but so far it looks like this so-called gathering in Edinburgh might not shape up to be the big event which the initial hype had suggested.

Nervous Jock, is this Vets event strictly for British vets? I plan on being there and it would be pretty cool if there was an event for vets of all nations who are attending. Even us American types.

Is this Vets as in Veterans or Vets as in Veterinary Surgeons?

Don't know the format yet but don't think its strictly tied into UK Vets only. I'll post details as and when I have them

Is that a British Legion do? As others have said, publicity here has been almost non-existent apart from a brief mention in the Scotsman a while ago. It is obviously being targeted mainly at the tourist trade. Never mind, I hope the city shows a better side to the public by then - it is an absolute disgrace at the moment. Princes Street and the Mound are barricaded off, Haymarket is a disaster area and that nice old pub there has been demolished all to make way for trams in a year or two's time. Hopefully the Royal Mile will escape all of this although there is talk of some kind of security roundabout in front of the Parliament building to protect our precious MSP's from bad guys. I'm not sure that we would miss them all the same! They are about to impose minimum prices for alcohol in Scotland so we will have to hire a van and take regular trips to Berwick or Carlisle to stock up. Who nows - maybe even the mob will move in. It did happen once before after all - shades of Al Capone et al.

Take care,
Ham.
Well, I remember how I heard of The Gathering quite well, Sir Semple spoke to our AGM at Grandfather's Mountain in 2007. The same time I would find the XMarkstheScot T Shirt at Clan MacBubba which lead me here!
Yeah, I'm going!
