Where to get a kilt?
Was finished a little early at the gym the other night, and was waiting for Michele to finish. Another one of the gym rats came up to me and asked "OK, where would I get a kilt?" We chatted for a few minutes, and I ended up giving him Stillwater and USA kilts website (and here or course). I told him if he wants to try a kilt as cheaply as possible, go with a SWK Thrifty. It's where I started, but I don't wear them any more, except for dirty jobs. USA Kilts, I said, was a bit more money for a casual, but a much better kilt.
Did I steer him right?

Sounds like a good place for him to start to me. Definately more cost effective than a full on tank if he is not sure if he likes wearing the kilt. Personally I jumped in with both feet, but I had been thinking and planning for that day for a number of years.

Agree
I've given the same advice to others.
This is not to be disrespectful to all of out other fine advertisers, but having ordered several kilts from a variety of sources, I think Stillwater is a good place to start and see if you want to get into kilts. The price is reasonable and one can progress later to better quality. It would be a shame to save up $600+ for a high quality kilt, only to have it hung in a closet, if the wearer was not really into kilts.
Others may not agree, but that's OK too.
I have several USAKilts Semi-trad. kilts, which I like and continue to wear frequently, depending on the occasion.
Hope your friend comes to like kilts!

Geoff...I think your recommendation was spot-on. I started with a kilt from Sportkilt...due to my proportions, it didn't fit me quite right...and now after hearing that they are allegedly selling some tartans that they haven't paid for the rights to, I don't think I'd recommend them. Have never heard bad experiences out of USAK or SWK. On a sidenote about SWK...understand that their kilts may not be trimmed in the fell creating a rather thick "pillow-butt" effect? Is this true of all of their kilts including the heavyweight?

Geoff, I would (and have) given the exact same websites for kilted newbies. Especially xmarks.

I own three SWK heavyweights. None of them have had their extra pleat material removed. I cut them out myself and added steeking to eliminate the "pillow" effect. Easy afternoon project.

I think the two supplier sites you gave him Geoff were spot on, especially Rocky's as he can see the whole price and quality spread and make a decision on what he wants and route to follow.

What he said! USA Kilts and Stillwater Kilts are my go-to guys.

I would give basically the same advice. One great thing is that both SWK and USAK explain exactly what their products are on their sites, so the consumer knows honestly what the consumer is paying for and getting. Also, they both have excellent service and communications with customers, so a first experience kilt-buying will be a good one.

I've not ordered from USA Kilts as of yet, but Stillwater has always been prompt with my orders from them, and a quality product to boot.
I really should get off my posterior and order from USA Kilts sometime.

That's the same thing I would have said. I might have added that with SWK he would probably be beat served getting a standard kilt. The economy and thrifty are cheaper, but I think they are a much lesser product. I have one thrifty...after I made some alterations it's okay for messing around the yard and such, but that's still about it.
The grass is greener on the other side of the fence...and it's usually greenest right above the septic tank.
