I, too, would skip the plaid. Good if you go piping but at the dance people would think you were wearing a cape and probably call you Captain Scotty. The bow tie is great from the description. Photos will confirm! Congratulations on your decision to wear the kilt to your prom. I wish I'd had the option lo those many years ago.

Personally, I'd give the fly-plaid a miss. It's really TOO formal for an Argyll, IMO. But then again, I can't think of an occasion where I personally would wear a plaid.

Studs and links are widely available. Basically any store that sells or rents formal wear will gladly sell you the tie and jewelry.

If you have time to mail order, then these guys or many others can fit you economically with something suitable.

They come in all shapes and kinds. It sounds like you envision a square/diamond silver set that matches your Argyll's buttons. That would be cool, so keep an eye out; but don't fret if they're all round instead.

I have heard it prescribed (:Rulz:), but I don't know how correctly, that black tie calls for black studs and cufflinks. Most commonly, that is yellow or white metal with black stone or enamel in the center. I think that plain gold or silver will work for either black- or white tie. For 3 dollars a decent looking set can be yours from the mail-order guys; it'll probably cost more that that to ship it. If you want to spend $75 or more for a set, you can easily do so. You may find a set of plastic studs in a new shirt, and they will work, in a pinch!

I actually have a set of square grey mother-of-pearl studs and links that would complement the square buttons; however there are 3 studs in the set, and most shirts these days take four. You may be able to find something like it.

I'm noticing that with the waistcoat, jacket and tie; that only a few of the buttons show anyway. The shirt I purchased has the little black circle studs already.
Also,my plan is to wear it to make more of an entrance, but take it off for the dancing and such.

Laddie, you have just stumbled upon one of the greatest bits of wisdom a man can have.

Back 20 years ago when I piped at a lot more weddings than I do now (around 50 a year) I would wear a black Argyll with wing collar and bow tie all the time.

At that time 90% of the weddings had the men in black tuxes with wing collar and bow tie so I blended in with the wedding party very well.

I found a set of square studs and cufflinks which I wore for years. I really liked the look of the square studs with the Argyll's square buttons.

I haven't worn a wing collar or bow tie for many years... now I dress for weddings like my avatar there.

Alrighty then boyos! Tonights the big shabang! I'll take a ton of pictures and be sure to post them. I'm wearing a tie with a pin that belonged to my grandfather. Thank you all for the advice!
