White Kilt
This might sound a bit silly...
I play bowls (Flat Green), and I've spoken to our National governing body the Engkish Bowling Association and they say that kilt wearing is acceptable for matches if it is part of your National Costume.
I've played in my traditional 9yd wool Campbell kilts and it was really soooo comfortable even in 32 degrees.
For friendly matches and County Competitions we wear white below the waist and our club shirts.
Does anybody know of a source/supplier or maker of a GOOD, smart white kilt (not cream but almost brilliant white) here in the UK (preferably in Scotlan).
I thought about 10yds or there abouts. It obviously needs to be a male garment....no female 'kilted skirt' type of thing will do.
I'm very reluctant to use ebay...I need to make sure the fit is perfect for playing.
Hope somebody comes up with a few suggestions.
Many thanks in advance,
Jim

with the number of kiltmakers here, I am sure someone can get you taken care of. If you are willing to have a US kiltmaker sew one up, then I am certing without a doubt that one can be crafted to suit your needs.

I think Hamish (who else? ) has a white kilt...
-
The list of what he doesn't have would be shorter would it not?

I vote for the rainbow kilt. At least that was the first one that popped into my head.

Now then lads, let's keep this on topic! Jim has asked about the possibility of getting a white kilt made in Scotland, and I believe I might be able to point him in the right direction......
Hi Jim,
Welcome to X Marks. This forum should be renamed "Everything You Wanted to Know About Kilts, But Were Afraid to Ask".
White kilt? Yes, I do have one and it was tailored for me in Scotland. Here are a couple of photos of it:

The fabric is a mid-weight poly-wool blend and the kilt was tailored for me by Howie Nicholsby at "21st Century Kilts" in Edinburgh four years ago. The material is not part of their general range but it is one of many hundreds that Howie still has immediate access to. His kilts are sewn by the same in-house traditional kiltmakers that are employed by his father at Geoffrey (Tailor) Ltd. They can be contemporary machine-sewn 6 yarders or traditional hand-sewn 8 yarders - you say what you want and they will provide it!
These are the contacts:
21st Century Kilts/Geoffrey (Tailor) Ltd.,
57/59, High Street,
The Royal Mile,
Edinburgh,
EH1 1SR
Tel: 0131 557 0256
E-Mail: info@21stcenturykilts.com
Howie is not keen on his clients self-measuring for his kilts and so a visit to him in Edinburgh, or catch him at one of his monthly London showrooms if that is more convenient, is recommended - but 'phone him first to chat things over.
I hope this helps.

Many thanks for your reply. I must admit, your white kilt is perfect.
I'll visit Geoffrey (Tailor) when I go home in October (family in Stirling). Should be able to get it ordered and made for start of the 2007 bowls season.
Regards
Jim

Apologies Jim! I thought you were a new boy - I mean a REALLY new boy!!

Hey Tartanjaz,
Thats a most angelic white kilt Ham has. Looks perfect.
Its ALL wrong for what you asked, and they don't make it anymore, but the old natural white Utilikilts Workman's would have made a nice "warmup" kilt or practice kilt. Would probably need to be bleached a bit whiter than it comes.
I believe Ham has one in his collection too.

Thanks Ron,
Yes Indeed I do have a white Workman's Utilikilt (now with some leeching from the dye in the brown leather straps, but still wearable!), and I love it to bits!
Here's a piccie of me wearing it in HM The Queen's back garden at Buckingham Palace three years ago:

I agree, if it were still available, it probably would require some bleaching to meet with EBA regulations. Mine was/is rather more cream than white.

the palace
Being invited to the palace is one thing,
but being invited alone -- wow, Ham; you're even more famous than we thought!
