I'm lucky enough to get a short trip to London (my first) for a conference on Jan 26th and 27th. I will have the evening of Jan 25th available and may the 26th. Any recommendation on what I may see, do, or where I may eat? Thoughts? Thx, :dance:

Rules Restaurant just off Covent Garden. It's on the pricey side, and you will definitely need to to wear a suit, but it's definitely worth it. Aside from being the oldest restaurant in London, it has a superb menu with many game dishes on offer. Google Rules Restaurant for details (and to book a table).

Depends on your budget for eateries. There are some very expensive restaurants in London, but there are also plenty of MacDonalds, Starbucks and Burger King if you need to economise. Some of the hotels offer bar meals and you might be able to pick up a reasonable quality meal in your hotel for a reasonable price.
The Heathrow Express train is probably your quickest way into the city centre from London Heathrow airport though rather expensive. The London Underground is much cheaper but slower.
Beware of the taxi rank at Heathrow. Cabs are very expensive and they are reluctant to take you if your hotel is near the airport as the drivers will have waited perhaps several hours for a fare and will want to travel a worthwhile distance. The last time I tried for a cab at Heathrow I was quoted £55 to £60 for the short distance to an airport hotel so I made the journey by bus instead and it only cost me £2.20.

When I'm in London I like to see a play. You can get same-day reduced price tickets at Leicester Square.

I'd also consider spending an extra day or two to see a bit of the city. Pity to travel all that way and never see anything on your first visit.

I had a pint here once after visiting Samuel Johnson's house just around the corner. Cozy but dark as I remember.

There are so many places to go and eat, and eat really well in London, it's so hard to pick out just one. I live in London so if you need any extra help just send me a message, and of course, enjoy your stay.

Your main trouble will be choice. There is plenty to do and plenty to see. Do you know roughly where you will be staying? It might help with recommendations - you don't want to spend the little time you have staring at a million adverts for Les Miserable, on the underground, travelling miles to some pub or restaurant on the other side of the city.

I think a decent pub is a good idea for food and drink; you can't get much more British! Either take a wander and look out for the "Cask Marque" signs, pop into the nearest bookshop and flick through the good pub guide or the good beer guide for your nearest recommended pub or download the CAMRA app to your phone and follow the arrow; then have many of our funny warm flat beers... they're really good!

If you end up near Kensington, with some time on your hands, pop to Hornets; you will find good quality vintage kilts, tweed galore, uncollected bespoke suits, barbour jackets and much more all at reasonable prices.

If you are in Oxford Street or Regent Street that night look out for me,I am a large Irishman in a Hi viz jacket supervising the unloading of Spanish artics,semis I believe they are called in America.:)
