And now for something completely different...
Bagpipes made from PVC pipe, duct tape, and cling film.
They don't sound half bad, either!

Quite a pleasant surprise!
Sound rather like Uilleann pipes.
-
Sort of like fireside pipes or smallpipes to my ear. Really innovative!
-
Very interesting. Not a bad sound. Good find, BREN.
-
Thank you, gents. I thought that the rabble might get a kick out of it.
:D
Agreed. They actually sound very pleasant.

Nice find Bren !! Now that IS something completely different and sounded pretty good , made my day ! :)
I happen to head up the Facilities Dept where I work ( construction & bldg. maintenance ) and this gives me some ideas .
My guys are pretty good with PVC pipe and duct tape , however , they are going to be cussing you and me both tomorrow when I tell them about their new project assignment !
Cheers , Mike

Indeed they will !
I'm going to show them your vid and then tell them ... okay boys , get out the duct tape and pipe ... by the end of the day we need to have a set bagpipes that sound like the vid ! :)

Very interesting! Thanks for sharing, Bren.
Cheers,

Very interesting set of affordable small pipes. I followed his link for instructions on how to make a set but they didn't address reeds or how to properly drill the chanter to get the right notes. I guess they are assuming you're already a piper?
Very cool project.
-
Nathan, it uses cling film type plastic as a membrane (think of a kazzoo) instead of reeds.
I was thinking about making a set for myself to record with since I usually only do overdubs with my chanter anyway.
I was thinking of using my practice chanter.
As a fellow musician, I think that you can agree, it's not the instrument. It's the player.
;-)
With that said, my piping shall stay confined to Logic Pro and Pro Tools. Haha.

Pics or it didn't happen! Lol.

Mike, I will be waiting with a pipers breath to see the results of your tasking to your crew.
Bren, great find mate and thanks for putting it up here, amazing what can be done with a little thought and experimentation. Cheers

Actually not new, because pipemaker David Daye has been making uilleann pipes out of PVC pipe for many years
http://www.daye1.com/pennychanter.html
His chanters perform very well, easily comparable to wood chanters by other makers costing many times more.
-
Mike, did your guys make you some pvc pipes?

Bren , they got started but had to stop as we got busy .
May take a day or two , but I doubt that I will end up with anything that is playable . :)
I'm thinking that I will end up with a " Red Green " version of pvc pipes . :)
Probably be a fun pic !
When I told them the pvc pipes needed to have a reed sound .... one guy replied " you mean this thing needs to sound like Lou Reed ? " :)
Cheers , Mike

Lol! That is too funny, my friend!
:D
Best of luck either way. If it even remotely quacks then it is a certified duck.
