Mind Games
Greetings all,
Some of the time my mind plays some strange tricks on me, and today was no exception.
Sometimes when I see more than three teenage males together I get a rather strange feeling that I will be getting a negative comment. Even though it is a rarity, I still let my mind not be focused.
Today while I was picking up a few groceries, I was walking out of the store when I saw about 10 male teenagers all ganged together heading my direction. The one who appeared to be the leader said to me "Cool threads dude!" Then all the others agreed and walked into the store. All that I could do was smile and say thanks. Yes I admit it, and really feel bad about my emotions, but I was prepared for the negatives.

I probably would have expected the same thing glen. I am also afraid it would have been because of the way I would have acted at the kids age. Fortunatly, we all grow up and sometimes we even mature. Glad the encounter turned out well and kudos to the young man!

I think more young people, particularly men would react positivly to kilts. But risk being kicked out of the "pack" for it. when the alpha male lets everyone know it's ok, they all agree.
But what does it say about us that we naturally assumed they were going to make a negative comment? in a sense doesn't that make us like all those who stereotype us for wearing kilts? something to consider. it isn't easy when the last 9 packs of teenage boys ripped on you, to give pack number 10 the benefit of the doubt.

I try to be open to the people that I encounter while in my kilt, but most of the time I dont even notice how people react until they come up to me. I dont get many comments from teenagers, though it may be due to the fact I am not that far out of my teens myself, though 24 is fast approaching me at the end of april. The people that normally come up to me are in their 40s or older, and usually are more shocked that I'm a young man in a kilt than anything else...

Well, I fit into that "male teenage" category, and I get antsy in those cases myself... and I'm not even wearing the kilt yet!

I think we expect the negative reactions because we all did the same things when we were teenagers. If you didn't make fun of people, then you were probably picked on, and that's a hard thing to get over. It's a part of life, a sucky part, but a part of life no less.

My wife calls me a pessimist.
I respond by saying: "At least most surprises a pessemist gets are pleasant surprises."

A couple of days ago I'm leaving work and a group of teenage boys go by and one shouts out
"Hey! Its the Irish Dude!"
Could of been worse

It seems to be the young men who wrench their necks doing double takes at my kilts.
And its the grungiest young men that give me compliments.
The young Mormon missionary boys dressed like FBI agents never comment.
