    Blackpool

A non kilted day today, but since a few of you like 'planes and I flew a different one today for my trip to Blackpool here a few 'plane piccies and a few of brash victorian Blackpool.

As the group Cherokee 180 was unavailable, I hired something slightly more modern - a 1981 Piper Pa-38 Tomahawk

An original late 19th century tramway (interurban) starts near the airport and runs along the coast for about ten miles to Fleetwood.

Blackpool tram, with the Victorian tower constructed in 1894 in the background, inspired by the parisian Eiffel Tower. Blackpool is a busy holiday resort in north-west England, with lots of entertainment, theatre, dance halls, casino etc.. and illuminations later in the season.

This Hovercraft was beached near the tram terminus.

Another 'plane load of holiday makers arriving at Blackpool Airport from Dublin.

Nice little plane. Just about to go fly the Cessna 172 SP today before the storms arrive. A friend of mine has a Tomahawk and it won't get off the runway at 4500' and 100 degrees F. Actually with a pint of fuel and skipping breakfast you might make it. Living near sea level with lower temperatures sure would be nice. The price of aviation fuel hasn't outpaced auto fuel yet running about $3.50 gal now but at 7 gal/hour it adds up fast. What is aviation fuel running over the pond? O'Neille

Avgas currently £1.27 per litre at Carlisle Airport, which equates to almost £6 (4 dollars) per gallon. Car fuel is still just under £1.00 per litre.

It looks as if you took the exchange the wrong direction. £6.00 figures out to $11.15. As of today, 1 USD = 0.538261 GBP.

Having just come back from Scotland a couple weeks ago, I am painfully aware of the dollar's poor position. <sigh> I still had a little over £125.00 when I got home and I didn't even bother going to an exchange window. I figure it will just lessen the pain that little bit, the next time I am across.

Ouch! Fuel costs are about what it costs for the whole plane (wet, including fuel) over here. It's been so hot I wore my canvas kilt I just made to go flying. 12 kt crosswind and fueling a high wing plane wearing a kilt on a ladder. Glad nobody had a camera. O'Neille
