MUFC v FC Barcelona
anyone else out there wringing their hands waiting for next wednesday's european cup final? with the long history between these two, the star studded teams and piles of trophies between them already this season, this could be a classic.
but like so many other over-hyped championships, i'm also hoping this isn't a 0-0 bomb decided on penalties.
i'm thinking they'll go hammer and tongs at one another for the first ten minutes of each half and then sit back and wait for the counter. i really like barcelona, but

Up the Reds! 3-2 United, Ronaldo with the winner, Giggs, Man of the Match.

the clubs have a pretty rich recent history to sweeten the pot. off the top of my head:
-united pipped barca 3-2 agregate in the 3rd round of the 84 cup winners cup
-united sold mark hughes to barca in 86. a failure...
-united beat a much fancied barca side featuring an ageing maradona 2-1 in the 1991 cup winners cup final
-barca absolutely tonked united 4-0 in a classic champions league group match at the nou camp in nov of 1994, with a clinical and entertaining display from the cryuff side that boasted stoichkov, romario, koeman, guardiola and a young jordi cruyff. stunning match.
-after johan's dismissal in 96, jordi was sold by barca to united in august.
-in the group stage of the 99 champions league the two sides battered one another with both legs remarkably finishing 3-3. beckham and rivaldo each scored from shocking distance...
-later that same year, united turned over bayern in the final, at the nou camp, which must have been painful for barca and their fans to see it happen on their park...
-barca won the european cup in 2006 in paris (over arsenal... which was nice)
-and of course last year united sneaked past barca in the champion's league semis and went on to beat chelsea on penalties in the final.
nothing like a thick plot...

As Celtic are not too good in Europe just now, my wish is for Man U to lift the trophy and do it well.

the barca defense is decimated with both center backs, including marquez, injured while the outside backs are suspended. i guess puyols will be sitting deep in the defense all night...
and from the tempting fate department, designated as the away side, united will wear an all white strip because, according to united spokespeople, it worked when they beat barca in the '91 cup winners cup final and it's the colors of barca archrival real madrid...
erm... poking a sleeping dog with a stick, anyone?
6.5 hours till kickoff.
