    What to wear?

I have read several threads lately posted by guys asking what to wear to certain events, so now its my turn! I was asked by a friend to wear my kilt to his wedding in a few weeks. I do not own a jacket or suit, so I am planning to wear my phillabeg (Crawford Modern), with a white long-sleeved shirt, a tie (still undecided), a black 5-button vest, black hose, and black dress boots. Would this be appropriate for a second wedding held at 2:00pm in the local country club? The groom actually said, "Clothing optional." I doubt anyone else will be there kilted, so I should have a slight advantage!

I am home alone at the moment so this is the only way I could photograph my choice of clothing. Perhaps I can find someone to photograph me in it another time.

Or I could try to pleate a nice cellophane kilt....

As you know you will be getting all sorts of ideas and like all these things unless you want to spend more money than perhaps you want to, you have to go with what you have. So, how smart is the country club and how smart are the people going to the wedding? You will not be far out with what you have,if it were me I think the black hose would go as would the boots. Black polished shoes would be more appropriate and a pair of bottle green hose too, if you can.If you were wanting to spend some loot, a tweed argyll and waistcoat would be just perfect.

I agree with Jock. A tweed jacket - with or without a waistcoat would look great.
You wouldnt have to fork out a lot for one either.

    Hi Viper,

You can only wear what you've got. On the face of it, it looks smart. Personally, I would go with shoes rather than boots. The other thing is the tie to match the kilt. I think it is worth hunting out a good one - you will after all be wearing it again and again.

    Enjoy the event.

    Regards

    Chas

Viper, I totally agree with the above posts! If you can't or don't want to buy you can go on the net, there are places you can rent Kilt Jackets for special events such as the wedding.

Green hose would look nice.. But you seem to have it covered. I second the shined shoes, too...

Knowing your area, as I do (family lives in Glenwood), you will be fine, and please.. I hope none take that clothing optional,litterally..lol

    wedding wear

I guess the big question is- will you be much more dressed up than the bride and groom? Assuming the "clothing optional" is a joke ( and I hope you'll take a camera in case it isn't) I think the trick is to fit yourself somewhere midway between the average guest and the groom. If you somehow learn that NOBODY ( including relatives of the wedding party) is going to be wearing a tie, you could go with your outfit as shown, no tie, just open collar. But I suspect somebody else will have one on and you will look nice with one. I am guessing you don't spend a lot of money on clothes, if you don't own a suit. That is an admirable way to live. But you might want to make a small detour from that path and pick up a burgundy tie. If you go to a thrift shop, you might be able to save enough to spring for a pair of hose to match. For some reason, there are a lot more burgundy ties than there are green ones out there, but either would be nice. When I say burgundy or green, I mean for the primary color. It could easily be burgundy AND green, which would be cool. If you or somebody you know, is good with a needle and thread, you could buy a small piece of fabric and make a nice bow tie, saving the scraps to make flashes for your hose.

I really like the vest and think it is a great compromise between dressed up and casual.

I never thought of that! I will definately have to figure out how to do this.

As for the boots, I recently purchased a really nice pair of ankle-height lace up dress boots. They can easily be polished. I cannot wear regular dress shoes right now because of an ankle injury. I need the extra ankle support and really don't like elastic bandages.

I have considered a pair of green hose, but I only have black right now and do not know if a new pair will arrive in time, though I may give it a try.
