Pictures of the oldies-Kilts and tartans

    Hey Y'all-
Over the years, I have seen reference to tartan swatches found in bogs, kilts that were box pleated tailored in 1790-so and-so, etc. Does anyone have pictures of these gems? I have looked high and low for pictorial samples of these items, but to no avail. I know that there are some books out there with pics, so barring any copyright issues, does anyone have pics of kilts or tartans from yesteryear? Preferably pre-Victorian times. thanks-Josh

I think Matt may have some photos of the kilts in the museum.

The starting point for anyone interested in the history of Highland dress is

    Old Irish & Highland Dress

    by H F McClintock

W Tempest, Dundalgan Press, Dundalk, 1943.

This exhaustively covers bits of costume recovered from bogs, surviving examples of Highland dress in museums, the iconography, etc etc.

I kept seeing this title crop up in the bibiographies of various books on Highland dress and I decided I needed to read the source.

Matt has the greatest hands-on experience with early kilts and tartans I know of.

Matt has the McClintock book on CD-ROM in the STM gift shop; and his own book, or course.http://giftshop.scottishtartans.org/books.htm
