A bit poor money wise so need advice

    Ladies and Gentlemen,

I now am the proud owner of both a MacLean Hunting Modern as well as a MacLean Modern (Red). The problem is due to unforseen circumstances, I am a wee bit short of money and am trying to get a kit ready for Burns night.

Question: Since I cannont afford a PC or Argyll, but I have a Harris Tweed Kilt Jacket, do I wear it to the Burns Night or should I go with a nice dress shirt and tie and forgo a jacket all together? I also have a knit sweater in a dark green that would go well with the MacLean Hunting Modern.

The sporran and shoes are taken care of.....what say you oh fountain of kilted wisdom? Can you help a penniless kilted cop not look too much like a beggar?

P.S. - I also have fly plaids in both Modern and Hunting Modern but everything I have read says leave them at home.

    Thanks all,

    Eric Schutte

There was a good thread around the time of last year's Burns Nights that made the point that most American Burns Suppers are overdone. Unless the invitation specifies "black tie, etc.", wear your tweed jacket and tie. Turn the fly plaids into bias-cut waistcoats!

    Have a good time!

Wear the tweed, man! I can't pull it off myself, but if you can, then do!

This is an entirely aesthetic and personal preference so only you can answer that question, but I prefer the red sett myself.
    I just think it's prettier.

I have a charcoal gray tweed argyll jacket and vest, but its a 48 Long (British sizing, so its a 46 Long US sizing). You're welcome to borrow it if it will fit.

Methinks the look of a kilt and a sweater is just fine for the N.W. Whichever tartan goes best with the sweater.

I've been to a couple of Burn's Night suppers and have seen everything from sweater to white tie and everythhing in between.
Personally, I would go with the tweed. I would definitely not go with just a shirt and tie. I did that once and overheard some chaps behind me snickering that they could not believe I had not worn a jacket. (I forgot to pack it)

On a side note, I am going to be ordering a Maclean Hunting Modern this coming Friday. I've had my jones on for about 2 months and I haven't even ordered it yet.
