Reactions to the Kilt in Mexico

By far the most common is "You Scottish?" or Escotia?. Of course the hucksters in the cities are more active trying to get me to check out their wares, tour, timeshare, whatever so its a natural come on for them.

My favorite - heard it twice is William Wallace!! So they must know the movie Braveheart well around here.

Ran into a guy from Scotland who was intrigued at the polyviscose casual kilt. He said kilts would be great here if they weren't wool like his back home.

Just when I'm getting used to all the comments, a LOT of comments, I'm out for dinner kilted last night when a guy comes up to me, I get ready for the kilt comment, and he says, you're the guy with the full back turtle tattoo right....nary a mention of the fact that I'm kilted. Then a few minutes later another guy hollars out about my Z Coil shoes...and again, nary a mention about the fact that I'm kilted.

So, results of my kilted research so far is that almost everyone seems to enjoy the kilt, most know it is from Escotia, hucksters latch onto it as a come on, at least one Scottish tourist approves, and some folks are more interested in Z Coil shoes and tattoos than kilts.

The weather here is VERY HOT and VERY HUMID...bringing and wearing my USA Kilts Casuals was a sound decision.

Only drawbacks so far are challenging winds on the beach, and the hotel doesn't supply any hangers that work with kilts.

So, if your headed for Quintana Roo, Mexico - kilt up, stay cool, and meet lots of folks.

Excellent report Ron, seems like you make a great ambassador for the kilt.

I also have had a lot of shouts of "You Scottish" or "Escocia" from the hucksters when I have worn the kilt in Spain.

You gotta admit though, that turtle tattoo is quite remarkable.

Ya, Ron, you have sea turtle medicine writtin all over you.

Are you using sporrans on this trip? I'm recalling a few threads on sporran snatchers in Mexico.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Well, its been raining HARD down here the last two days...folks are indoors fighting for Internet time.

I have worn my Stillwater Nightstalker black leather sporran - but when venturing into Playa del Carmen and Puerto Moreles wore that jean pockets rig under the kilt for my wallet and passport. Put a dummy wallet in the sporran - just in case. No problems though.

I've been reading this thread with some interest, but had nothing to contribute to the conversation, until now. I had an experience with a Mexican lady this morning. I was wearing my olive Amerikilt, dark green hose with Flamingo Kilt's Isle of Skye hose toppers, and a black button down shirt. This lady with a fairly thick Mexican accent got really excited and told me how wonderful I looked, and was very surprised to learn that the kilt was an American design. If you're having as good a time with all of them as I did with the one I met this morning, you must be having a heck of a vacation. Post pictures!

Very cool Ron! I've never been to that part of Mexico but I've been to Mexico many times--including driving the entire Baja peninsula several times. Always a blast! Everywhere I've been the people (locals) were super friendly, met lots of travelers and expats, and I never got ripped off.

    Viva Mexico!

    Kilt on!

Wow, Ron, they must know more about kilts in Mexico than they do in the Caribbean. I kept getting asked if I was English!

So, the last couple of days it rained often and hard. Fun to watch the palms dance in the wind - but for sure not kilt weather. So I wore a pair of chino style shorts home on the plane. So we're standing in the Disneyland like line at the airport and an American guy who'd apparently been on our flight down too said, "Hey, where's your kilt?"

Amazed he remember me a week later and in dressy shorts. Explained about the foul weather and complimented him on his memory. He claimed a photographic memory. So I asked him what tartan I wore last week. He said green and red....so half right for the Isle of Skye.

Drove on home from LA today - kilted.

Will work on pics when the laundry is done.

Here's a pretty dark one of some culture blending at a restaurant in Playa del Carmen...they hustle photos at this place.

T-shirt I'm holding is for the local Bomberos. Gonna wear it with my firefighter's memorial tartan kilt.
