Which one would be better suited for a traditional/formal kilt?
I am planning for my next kilt purchase. My Sport Kilt will be fine for casual, sporting and 501st events.
I want something I could wear to semi-formal/formal events (and casual too).
I am not ready to commit to a full on tailored/big money kilt (yet).
So a couple of choices I am considering are these:
Stillwater Wool Heavyweight
-or-
USA Kilt Semi Traditional
The price range of the USA Kilt is what I would like to stay around, so if there are other options I am not aware of, please let me know!
What say ye, fellow forum members?
And thank you in advance!

Well, the USA Kilts Semi Traditional is a "full on tailored" kilt, just not a "big money" one! It will be made to your measurements, which the Stillwater won't, and the since the PV material is washable, you can wear it to casual stuff that you might not want to get the woolie around. I wear mine from BBQs to formal balls. http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...-review-60943/
Plus, Rocky could make you one in Prince of Wales, the 'official' 501st tartan, http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...s-music-39690/
Order of the Dandelion, The Houston Area Kilt Society, Bald Rabble in Kilts, Kilted Texas Rabble Rousers, The Flatcap Confederation, Kilted Playtron Group.

Zardoz has his finger on the pulse of this one-- I'd follow his advice.

Excellent. This is the kind of info I am looking for!

I can vouch for the quality and fit of a semi-traditional kilt from Rocky atUSA KILTS. I have one and it is the one that sees the most use. I'm saving for another one now.

Skye Highland Outfitters also offers a PV kilt as does Jhiggins.
From what I know Skye's is also made to measure but I don't really know about Higgin's

Everything at Higgins is made to measure--kilts, jackets, etc...

I'm not throwing USA Kilts under the proverbial bus, but you really can't go wrong either way. If, however, you're a bit tricky for sizing, then go USAK. But if you're like me, and can wear a SW off-the-rack, then it just opens up your tartan options.
I have a SW heavyweight in the black "shadow" tartan, and it's really nice. And it was really cheap (price, not quality). It has the look of a traditional kilt without the "look" of a traditional kilt, if that makes any sense.
Then again, USAKilts are really nice, too. I'm not much help, I couldn't decide either.

I only have my 1 kilt and can't draw much of a comparison among makers, but my kilt was made by Rock and USA Kilts. I will say, however, that my kilt arrived far sooner than I had ever imagined and fits like a glove. Having the tailored kilt made to my specific needs has spoiled me tremendously. I can't even imagine getting a kilt now in a "standard size".
I will certainly add to the number of kilts, likely from various makers. But I can assure you they will all be made to my size, not off the rack.
Just my 2 cents...
BTW, I think a picture of you in your kilted 501st outfit is missing here
