Kilt and Funerals
I have been asked by my partner and her sister to wear my kilt to the funeral of their Grandmother a lady of Scottish birth. I have been asked to arrange a piper which I have done, but should I wear my kilt they say it would show respect but I dont want to detract from what is a solemn occasion. Dont want to upset them but at the same time dont want to upset anyone else by wearing it. What do you suggest I do.
Thanks
Deacon

If it is the family wish that you be kilted to honor the deceased, then so be it. Condolences to the family as well.
I've found that most relationships work best when no one wears pants.

It seems to me by the information you provided in your post that it would be disrespectful to deny this Scottish woman's loved ones one of their requests while fulfilling the other. It is the responsibility of everyone who attends to show respect for the wishes of the family.

Yes, wear the kilt, but refrain from accessories which are too flashy, black flashes instead of red, that sort of thing.

A black neck tie I can understand. Wearing black flashes seems affected to me. As has been pointed out in numerous threads discussing dress appropriate for funerals, Highland Scots tend to dress in what they normally wear to daytime events. Jock Scot has posted a link showing photos of the obsequies of the late Chief of the MacLeods...worth checking out.

As you have been asked to wear the kilt by some of the family of the deceased you are on firm ground. I don't know ,how much kilt attire you have, but your tartan kilt, black polished shoes, day sporran, any colour hose(other than white), any colour flashes(we never wear black to funerals), tweed(any colour)day jacket, white shirt, black four in hand tie will do you fine and will fit the sad occassion perfectly.
Google Chief John MacLeod of MacLeod's funeral pictures for help------I might add that some mourners are wearing black silver buttoned argylls and that is fine-----they happened to be mostly Americans.
Thank you Sandy.

Deacon,
Best to honor the wishes of the family, and celebrate the life.
My condolences.

Thanks to all for your advice on this matter.
I was concious of the fact that apart from the Piper I would be the only person wearing the Kilt you have made me feel a little more comfortable about wearing my Kilt for the funeral.
Thanks again for the advice and your condolances for the family.
Kind regards
Deacon
