Ruche Tie

Lately there has been a lot of discussion about white hose and other accessories that divide many of us. I haves aversion to bowties. But I would like to plan my purchases for a formal look and I have been looking at the ruche ties. I know many have stated that they hate them but I like them. Are they really as bad as white hose and other seemingly dreadful accessories. What says the rabble?

Cowher: I like ruche ties, too, though I regard them as less formal than a bow tie. I have a red one that livens up a party. No one will pay any attention to your bow tie, but LOTS of people will ask, "What in the hell is that?!". ;-)

I you must, at least get a proper cravat and tie it as a ruche so that you can control the "scrunchiness."

Ruche ties are an invention of the fashion industry and tux rental/sales shops because they photograph so well.

I try not to let their origin prejudice me against them, but deep inside I know it does.

Style and fashions change. We can't expect to use our latest tastes and still be consistent with tradition. On the other hand some new fashions are obviously stupid. Each of us has to decide whether it's ridiculous or if it will offend someone else.

You have to balance whether you care about offending or whether it's likely to do so. There's a balance between doing what you want to do, and if there really is a possibility of offense, whether it matters.

I can't imagine the ruche tie offending anyone on the planet, but it may indeed not be to some folks' taste. I notice on this site a lot of major friction between those who insist on their personal right to do what they want, and those who place a premium on getting along with others without upset. I deeply respect those rights of the individual, but I place a slightly higher premium on respect for others.

While it may not be to taste for others, in the case of the tie it is highly unlikely to actually truly offend, so if you like it, go for it!

Cowher: I assume that my response qualified, but just in case allow me to elaborate. I like people walking up to me and asking, "What in the hell is that?!" ;-)

More seriously, over the years (decades?) bow ties, deservedly or not, have gotten the reputation of being "stodgy, boring and/or up-tight", or at best "requisite to invisibility". There is no risk of that in the ruche, especially bright colored ones. They're more like the plumage on the Bird of Paradise boldly announcing, "Here I am! Look what I've got! Isn't it cool and colorful?!"

Some people like that and some don't. :-)
