Hose and flashes suggestions MacQueen muted
I can't remember ever wearing plain solid color socks with suits so I don't know why I thought dark grey hose would be good. They look nice with my grey jacket and matching tartan flashes but I need more color and texture. Your suggestions for socks and flashes are most welcome. The tartan is MacQueen muted from House of Edgar. I think the image is a little brighter than the actual but it is close. My first thought was a mustard hose with cable knit top and black garters. I also think that something more formal (not black tie) and something casual is in order. Thanks in advance for words of wisdom.
Peace
Henry

Re: Hose and flashes suggestions MacQueen muted
As always, my advice would be to not use any of the kilt's main colours for the hose.
Just as you would not choose black pants to coordinate with a black shirt.
Yes yellow might look great. Or a bright blue. Or some sort of green?? Or purple??
Black and white and grey hose don't clash with anything, but neither do they add anything.

Re: Hose and flashes suggestions MacQueen muted
I wear mustard yellow hose with my MacQueen modern kilt and think they look quite good, so I vote for mustard hose!
Richard's point is a good one, though; you can wear virtually any colour hose you'd like. Still, I'd probably stay away from reds...

I think the various brown hose look very nice with red based tartans. House of Cheviot's "Dark Natural" and "Bison" are my two favorites.
Santa Wally posted some nice photos here recently at Niagra Falls with his red based Maple Leaf tartan with both red and yellow hose, if you would like a preview of those combinations as well.

Wow those mustard hose are very bright.
I think the red looks nicer and maybe with yellow flashes would highlight the yellow in the kilt

Re: Hose and flashes suggestions MacQueen muted
I went back and looked at the tartan image in the OP and I think my first choice, for ordinary day wear, would be Lovat Blue. I don't know why; I just looked at that tartan and I imagined myself wearing that kilt and looking down at Lovat Blue hose. For dressier occasions I might go with a strong lovely "Ancient blue" or Royal blue.
When I think about it I know why... the tartan is in "warm" colours, the red and the yellow. What coordinates best with "warm" is "cool". Mix red and yellow together and you get orange, and blue is opposite orange on the colour wheel. Some technical art talk, I know, but in retrospect blue hose popped into my head for a reason.
I think a Lovat Blue tweed kilt jacket would look fantastic with that tartan. In that case I would go different with the hose, a rather darker and stronger blue, or yellow even.

I appreciate the suggestions. And yes, the color wheel makes perfect sense I just did not think about it.

Re: Hose and flashes suggestions MacQueen muted
So I figured our my dilemma of which hose to wear. My problem was that I was looking at the kilt and nothing seemed to be right, my view was too small. I needed to expand my view and look at the “outfit.” My wife talks about “nice outfit”, a term that I have resisted. However, it is exactly the “outfit” that determines which hose to wear. Maybe the hose should match the kilt, or maybe the hose should simply compliment (not fight) the kilt and the hose can match either the shirt or tie or jacket or waistcoat.
For example, wearing a blue shirt with my kilt Friday night I realized that lovat blue hose would compliment the kilt while matching the shirt; and that mustard garters would bring out the muted yellow in the kilt. Now the entire outfit works together. As much as I was considering the kilt as the center piece, even a soloist playing with the orchestra needs to work together and not overshadow the other musicians; it is together that it all works. Thanks for all the advice.
Peace
Henry

The mustard Bowmore Hose from House of Cheviot would look really nice, I believe.
