    blue jean x-kilt

I finished my X-Kilt the other night. Special thanks to Alan for posting the instruction manual. I probably spent about six hours on the project. Maybe 8. The greatest amount of time went into reading the instructions and making sure I was doing the right thing next. I didn't need to tear out any stitching, but I'm thinking I may need an alteration (more later). I did two modifications to the design. First, I put a pair of D rings and a matching jean strap on the right side, instead of velcro, allowing me to do away with the extra outer apron strip. There is a small bit of velcro on the top of the under apron to hold it in place. Second, I took a raveled edge of the fabric (created by the washer) and sewed it onto the edge of the apron, from behind, with the second line of double stitching.

Here's a photo of the layout. I set up a spreadsheet to calculate the positions of all the pleat lines, and then I measured and marked them from one true line. The lines came in handy throughout the project:

Here's a photo of the kilt on the ironing board. The pleats have been sewn in with gold thread. The taper is pinned in with heavy T pins, one for each line of stitching. After I had the taper set I ironed them down, took them to the machine, and did them in matching blue thread.

Here's a photo of me wearing it. I think it's too long -- do y'all agree? I'm thinking of taking the hem up to shorten it.

I like the choice of contrasting thread colour against the fabric. The length looks good to me but it's your kilt, so do as you please

I think it is a wee bit too long but then I tend to wear mine top of knee to an inch above.

It looks great. You did an excellent job and in a short amount of time.

I think I'd just hike it up a little higher on the waist and not fool with raising the hem.

I really like the gold thread. It looks like the way blue jeans are made.

The contrasting thread is a nice touch. As fast as denim fades there really isn't much point in color-matching thread anyhow. Well done.

Looks good, although I would agree, it may be a bit long. However, that is really personal preference, so wear it where you like it.

And the gold contrasting thread is very nice looking. Really keeps true to the blue jeans tradition.
