Kilt Hose - Colour advice requested
To preface, I tried the search function, and did not find a workable answer.
Should the color (or colour if you prefer) of your hose co-ordinate with the tartan, or your jacket/waistcoat/sweater/jumper for casual or semi-formal wear?
Presently, I own three pair of hose (five if you count soccer socks). The colors are white, ancient green and Lovat green kilt hose, and black, and lavender soccer socks. My current kilts are in MacQueen tartan, and Sport Kilt's 'Royal Purple' (looks like 'Warrior' to me ). With the red, black and yellow in the MacQueen, and purple, black and white in the Royal Purple, are there any hose colors that I should acquire for casual wear with these tartans? Are there any 'must have' hose colors to own, regardless of tartan they are worn with?

I fond that working against matching the colours seems to look better than all matching although matching up can look quite good too. I get the best mileage from my lovat blue hose.

From a personal standpoint, I think black hoses are indispensable in a variety of circumstances, especially for black tie events. Fore a more casual look, I like bottle green hoses (with red flashes) but I do'nt think they are matching your tartans. Otherwise, the best choice is the one you like!

I have never owned a pair of black hose and would never wear them. Black tie events call for diced, tartan, or perhaps solid coloured hose. Black looks too macabre and dull, most un-Highland. Of course this is my opinion, and you are certainly free to ignore it.

I never wear black hose, either, though I do know many who like them precisely because they own many kilts and black is one of those colors that tends to work well with a lot of tartans. For me, personally, though, they have always been too dark. I don't know what it is about them, just not my cup of tea.
Either of the options you mention will work fine (hose that tone well with the tartan, or that tone well with the jacket, etc). When using the tartan for your inspiration, I tend to select a color hose that will bring out a minor color of the tartan. For example, with your MacQueen, I would wear yellow hose rather than red or black.

That's what I do, and I really like the look - my wife doesn't share my love of yellow hose, though, and is constantly "suggesting" that I tone it down a bit.
My two-year-old son has a pair of black kilt hose, but that's more because the colour choices for toddler hose tend to be very limited; it was either black or [DELETED IN AN ATTEMPT TO PREVENT REHASHING AN OLD DISCUSSION], so I chose what, to me, is the lesser of two evils!

I sometimes wear black hose with my black and blue clergy tartan kilt, because it picks up the black clergy shirt nicely, but unless I'm wearing a tweed jacket it could seem like too much black.

In past discussions, many forum members expressed sentiments of dislike for wearing white hose. Is there also a movement afoot to discredit the wearing of black hose as well or is it simply a matter of personal tastes?

Re: Kilt Hose - Colour advice requested
The white hose distaste seems to have come from the fact that white hose are often seen as part of a kilt hire package......so somehow lowly?
However I think that white / cream hose can enhance the look of a kilt outfit depending on the occasion. It is strange because the majority of Scots that I see in kilts wear cream, black, grey, lovat blue or green hose............I dont think I've seen any diced, yellow or other bright colours recently

Well, my personal taste is not to wear black hose, even to a funeral. What others choose to do, is entirely down to them.
