Teflon?
I'm looking at a new kilt to wear while dragon boating for next season because my old one is falling off me. I've lost about 5cm (2") off my waist this year and intend to keep it off. I might even shed another 4-5cm next year, but I'm not that concerned about it. My questions to the athletes are;
How important is it to you to have your workout kilt made from one of the Teflon coated range of fabrics (Nevis or Jura) for the extra stain protection? Do you care at all? Do you just suffer the dirt? Is it a problem for you?
I definitely want this made from wool since it was terrifically comfortable paddling in the wool this year, especially when the temperatures weren't too warm. When it gets hot I can wear my PV Casual and the Velcro fasteners means the weight loss isn't as problematic.
What do you say? Should I be worried at all? The inlet water can get pretty grimy in the early summer when the algae is in bloom, but I don't think it's even as bad as a somewhat mucky field might be. I need some experienced folks to weigh in on this for me.
Teflon or move on?

Re: Teflon?
If I'm understanding the question correctly, the answer hinges upon your priorities. I bought my USAK (teflon-coated) casual hoping that, even after tough-wearing conditions, I could still wear it to pubs and festivals and not look like I did the day before. It has fulfilled those expectations wonderfully. If your preference is wool rather than stain-resistance, I don't have any advice...sorry!

Re: Teflon?
Sorry X I cant speak directly to your question, but I do have an 8 yard PV kilt from Josh that is, of course, a whole different animal than my 4 yard casual kilt.
That may be another option to consider.
And, if you needed the extra lap insulation, with your sewing skills, perhaps doubling the apron thickness would get you really close? Maybe best of both worlds. Just a thought.
Best of luck,
Brooke

Re: Teflon?
I've never thrown in 100% wool. I have thrown in PV and also in a Fraser and Kirkbright wool/polyester 11 ounce blend 6-yard kilt. Both were just fine.

Re: Teflon?
Teflon has been suggested by some research as being carcinogenic. Personally, I wouldnt want it next to skin that has its' pores open - just in case.

Re: Teflon?
Does anybody know if you can use "scotch guard" on a wool kilt?
Waterproofer for clothing?

On the surface, I don't see why not. That is, if you can use it safely on wool ( see product warnings first)
ThT said, it is not a waterproofer. It will coat fabric fibers, but not the gaps between the fibers.

Re: Teflon?
I'm not at all worried about the wool getting wet. When it does it's actually warmer.

Thousands of years of wool wearing fishermen can't be wrong.

Re: Teflon?
I am not thinking wet from water. i am thinking of buying a few minutes of clean up time and stains if food or drink were spilt on it.
