Punchy-kicky pride
Yesterday, my son competed in his first big Tae Kwon Do tournament. It comprised of two sparring competitions and one forms (poomsae) competition. A few months ago, when he first began sparring, the little guy took a shot to the solar plexus and since then has been very hesitant in practice, rarely doing anything other than dancing away from his opponent. He and I had a long talk last week about the importance of facing one's fears, climbing back on the horse, standing your ground, etc.
Wouldn't you know, a 6 year-old actually listened:

Two first place medals and a priceless life lesson. Yeah, I'm proud of the fact that he won, but ecstatic that he overcame his mental block and completely turned it around. Through 10 matches, some against higher ranks, he was squared off, stalking, feinting and scoring like crazy.
Nice work, Vaughan. Your old man loves you.

Congratulations to both of you.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Re: Punchy-kicky pride
Thanks.
He also earned a third place trophy for his forms. Since success in those relies upon memorization and strict adherence to rules, I was not expecting a performance even that good. He is my child, after all, and I don't do well in either of those areas.
