New Member intro
Hello Everyone,
I am a new member, I live in Maryland USA. I am single, self employed. I am in the process of getting things together to make my first kilt. I am looking for advice about learning this wonderful art. I have a family tartan, Hunter. The kilt I will be making is for my boyfriend, he will be wearing it in his daughters wedding, May 2013. I have been sewing for almost 40 years. I have made lots of different things, & I am kind of creative. I try to think outside the box sometimes when I am creating a garment. I think if I just take my time & go slowly I should be able to do this. The pleating is what I think I'll have trouble with, I have Barb T's book, "The Art of Kiltmaking". If anyone can give me advice, or help, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Lady Emer

Welcome lady Emer. An an ambitious project, but there are lots of good folks around here, who are more than willing to share their expertise. I alas am not one of them. Best of luck. Robert

I have not tried it, (so why even comment, eh?), but I have seen fantastic results from people who have used Barb's and Elsie's book on the first try. I would read it very carefully and do exactly what it says. From what I have been seeing either we have many lucky first tries OR it is so well written that, if followed carefully, success can be had. No doubt you will hear from others who have done this - like Usonian just a few miles North of me here. Good for you wanting to do this fine thing.
And, by the way, Welcome from the highlands of Central Massachusetts.

Welcome from another fan of TAoK. Pleating does take attention to detail and precise stitching, but is not really difficult to get right, provided you take your time, are willing to back out of mistakes, and follow Barb's instructions. You will be amazed at what you can do!
