You tell me, is this sporran made from rabbit or tabby cat?
We can put aside the discussion about buying or wearing a made sporran.
So I saw this sporran on Ebay and, well, being quite a natural wise with little tack or reverence, I had to buy it.
My question is, do you think this sporran is actually made from rabbit fur, or do you think its made from silver tabby cat? I have yet to find a single picture of a rabbit with silver tabby pattern to its fur.
And yes, I suspected that it was cat before I ordered it. The macabre nature of it made it irresistible. "The man wears a skirt and carries a purse made from kitty fur" has a certain ring to it. lol

I've never come across a rabbit with that sort of pelt and worked in a pet shop for over 3 years and spent a hell of a lot of time outdoors as a narure reserve warden, squaddie and bushcraft instructor.
As it's made in Pakistan, it may not be rabbit...

Well - it does look as though it did not end well for one of the Poosii tribe, but I suppose it could be someone getting creative with a large felt tip pen.
There will most likely be some who will look at it and cry 'oh how could you!' due to their affinity for the Poosii people, which is very strong for some.

Visually, I'd say it looks like rabbit that has had the black stripes & spots dyed on.
Given where it came from, it could be anything. It could be the cat that used to belong to the little girl who lived next door to the sweat shop, or it could be the remains of a rare creature previously unknown to science.

Exactly. I've seen loads of Pakistani sporrans like that, rabbit with spray-painted patterns of various sorts to mimic various sorts of fur.
You can pick up these painted rabbit pelts at local leather shops like Tandy Leather.
Some of them look very nice! A piper friend has a high-quality (non-Pakistani) sporran made from beautifully patterned fur, which is nothing more than painted rabbit.
BTW be careful wearing that sporran and chain strap! Many Pakistani sporrans and chain straps have rough bits, metal burrs, on the back which will absolutely ruin a kilt. I've seen $700 kilts with the front aprons shredded from this.
With Pakistani sporrans, chain straps, waist belts, buckles, etc you have to carefully inspect the reverse side and file the burrs down till completely smooth.
Legitimate sporrans and chain straps, from UK or North American makers, are as smooth as glass on the reverse side and do no damage to the kilt.

Thsnks for the advice on the sporran chain. I had that problem and the fix was better chain from the Ave hardware store.
I keep looking at the sporran pic and my cat. While dyed fur is a possibility, I'm still thinking cat is a distinct possibility.
I have a coat with a fur lined hood, made in China. The tag claims it's coyote. Investigative jourealism says it's most likely dog. In either case, it looks good and is warm.
