greetings from vienna
hi bravehearts,
even i ve been welcomed warmly i just find this thread and want to say hello again to everybody.
i m from vienna in austria/europe, you know were mozart, beethoven.... lived.
i m 24 year old political science student and wear my kilts everyday since last summer. except our cold windy winters, where i ve to find a solution for coming winter.
vienna is nice city but we still don´t have much bravehartes here. to make you laugh about us freaky austrians i can reclaim that in one of our 9 countries from austria, in carintia a tailor started to provide the "carintian kilt".
the thing started when a piece of tartan was found in carintia, dated from just over 5000 years. so earlier than any kilt found before, and there were in fact celts in austria during roman imperium. however thats the marketing history and saying that men have worn in the past no trousers , as traditional wear should then be no more seen the leather "knickerbocker" short but the kilt
at least we had also the presenter of "want to be a millionaire" in one of those kilts on tv.
a kilt start from austria, this tailor as i know had only sold a few hundred kilts yet. but now look at those ugly sporrans

take care

Greetings mcnice and welcome to the friendliest Baoard on the WEB.
....Ok I haven't visited all of them but you will soon see the fellows here are always willing to lend a helping hand and share in your experiences.
Thanks for the mini history lesson. I am both French and Scot so I have a heritage in Kilts from Brittany and from Scotland. But quite honestly that has nothing to do with me want to wear one and I don't use that as a reason to justify it. I am just man enough
Great to have you here! and that is a nice tartan. I like the darker ones best and that looks great to me.

I liked the tartan and the three guys in the one photo all had nice sporrans. I would have like to get a close up of the one they offered for sale. How are the prices there and what tartan are they showing? (on A side note the girl in the introduction was beautifull,I would have went to the site just for a peek at her) YOu guys in Austria are lucky .
talk to you later

Austrian kilt...
Mcnice,
Many thanks for passing this on; I heard about this on BBC Scotland's Fred MacAulay show and on the web, but hadn't see the tartan yet -- I like it! I will have to pass this along to a friend of mine here in Missouri who is a member of our local German/Austrian/Swiss heritage society.
Welcome to the board! (and apologies for my delay doing so!)
Cheers!
T.

and do u speak french johnallen, cuas ei went to a french school and we could practice. i v seen breton tartans, they are beautiful. i have no heritage and am only man enough. but considered that everybody in scotland wearing in casual a kilt is a tourist for sure, i always say even if i had been a scot i would wear my kilts each day...
david, the tartan shown in fact is beautiful, and as i know it is the only tartan they make kilts with. its called "carintian karo"; karo means the box from the kilt as well and is a synonyme in german for tartan.
i doon t nknow exactly, but the colours are representing nature as earth, water and so on.
those sporrans looks to rude, to austrish to me ;)
if u click this link http://members.aon.at/rettl/indexkaro.htm and then on "für herren" (for gents) u ll see what they cost: up to 790 euros, about maybe 680 USD and this crazy guy uses buckles in silver
freelander please tell me the title of ur threads, i will also search at your profile.
i would like to be on tv with my kilt, if it would be the occasion of being at the million show - just good.
but it wasn´t me, i don´t know about a contestant weraing it, but the presenter looked great althogh he wore one of these creepy sporrans.
episcopalscot maybe u can convince those germanophone heritage guys to wear at least the real traditional wear

Actually, I kinda likr those sporrans. They have kind of a barbaric look that appeals to my uncivilized nature.

an céad mìlte Fàilte mcnice. Good to have you aboard. I have been to Austria only once with the Scouts to Vienna in 1990 for an internation camp. Long before I had a kilt I am sad to say. Some of the other scouts had kilts and even then I envied them.
HAPPY KILTING

hello mcnice! I will be coming to your area very soon! I am attending a Veterianry conference in Munich later this week and my wife and I will be taking a side trip to Austria. I also liked hearing about the history of the austrian kilts. It's nice to hear that not every kilted person is a Scot!
