I was looking for opinions on what the thoughts were on mixing the 3 button vest with jackets other than a Prince Charlie? I'm looking around and don't have either currently. I think the vest might get "lost" in an Argyll but please chime in!

I find that I keep my jacket unbuttoned when I have on a vest and kilt (even when standing). When just wearing a jacket (kilted or in slacks), I remain buttoned except when sitting. The vest is useful (pockets available) with an open jacket, and the vest color or pattern (often not a matching set) will be seen. I think a military application would be the only circumstance I would vary this plan. After my honorable discharge (1977) I don't have that problem.

Thanks, so basically the look would be fine in your opinion. With the proliferation of black jackets and vests I believe I very well would end up with both pieces being black as I am trying to get them as economically as possible
It works very well as shown in this X Marks member's image: 7a505c96d05d62a84173aebea4e2c337--kilt-black-tie.jpg

Indeed it does in fact that whole outfit is absolutely perfect. I haven't seen people in person who have been dressed in something different from the usual
I wear a waistcoat with my Argyll and am happy with the look.

Potentially alright with argyll worn as evening wear and for some reason you have a prince charlie waistcoat and not the coatee, but not appropriate for daywear. Honestly, I think an argyll with 5 button vest and bowtie for evening wear is a better look. A prince charlie waistcoat belongs with an evening jacket. Were I to see the combo you suggest at the games or Burns Night, I would assume the wearer was not familiar with highland dress.
