tweed shooting waistcoat with kilt?
I've done several searches through old threads here and didn't find anything.
British tweed shooting/hunting waistcoats/gilets are so very practical, with handwarmer pockets and huge cargo pockets, water-resistant, quilted lining to keep you toasty warm, they come in nice-looking tweeds, and they're surprisingly inexpensive. I've seen a large number for well under $100 US, sometimes around $50 US.
Does anyone ever wear them with kilts? I can't remember seeing such, and I'm guessing the answer from our British friends will be "it isn't done".
They do look to be too long.

Funnily enough only the other day, one of my sons was wearing something similar, but with a rather more tailored and flared look whilst out shooting and wearing the kilt. Whilst it was worn over a pullover with more of a practical thought in mind(large and easily accessed cartridge pockets) rather than a fashion choice, it didn't look too out of place. Sadly, due to rule 11 considerations, I don't bother taking pictures of kilted gentlemen and their kilt attire whilst partaking in a traditional Scottish country pursuit.

Thanks, good to hear that it is done!
Because our weather has finally turned a bit colder and my only waistcoats are the ordinary tweed ones which just aren't all that warm, and don't have those big roomy pockets.
But it's not cold enough for a coat... if that makes any sense.

I would think this would be the perfect vest for our winter hikers/campers. I believe a backpack would be comfortable with this vest. The extra pockets would let one forgo a sporran. The pockets of a utility kilt would also give ample space for supplies.

Richard,
If you have such a vest, try it out with a kilt and post a photo. I'm sure the rabble will give you feedback.
Frankly, it seems a sensible idea to me, especially for those casual/hiking/outdoorsy occasions. The big pockets can also help out those who find it hard to fit all their things in a sporran.
I wonder if any manufacturer might make a shorter version of the traditional shooting jacket. It could make an interesting kilt jacket, if it didn't hang too low.

I wear one of these occasionally. Mine is much like the one on the right.

I suppose the waistcoat being a bit long wouldn't matter much if the sporran wasn't worn, using the waistcoat pockets to carry things.
It's the way the sporran gets covered that I don't like, if a jacket or waistcoat is too long.

Things are always too long for me. I doubt you'll have that problem. I either leave mine open or leave just the bottom snap undone for access to the sporran.

I dont have a vest like that, only a full on Hogg's of Fife field coat. But I do wear the Orvis pocketed tweed vest on occasion, kilted or pantsed.
