    "Boulder" Kilts

Well... SportKilts has decided that UtiliKilt, PittsburghKilts, BearKilts, AmeriKilts, Buzz Kidder, and Victory Kilts (and probably twenty others) are not saturating the market enough. They've decided to enter into the "solid" market with their version. Beltloops, a rear pocket, sewn-down pleats... familiar! The price is there too.

Here's the link to the new product:

    Oh my gosh that's ugly.

Perhaps it's just a bad product angle shot, bad lighting, or the fact somebody didn't take time to fluff the pleats out and make it hang right, but it's just ugly. Looks like one of those "pant suit" skirts from out of the 70s. PKs, AKs, even UKs, look good.

I wonder how bad this will end up curling?

You are right. Then again we are spoiled by the quality of the above mentioned companies (wimps way out of typing the names)

I know that the original SportKilts are nothing like an actual kilt at all... except for the fact that they have tartan patterns on the material. This appears to be their attempt to break into the solid kilt world. For their sake, I sincerely hope that they are MUCH better than that! The construction description appears to be all the things that folks complained about with their originals... beltloops, sewn pleats, pocket, etc.

Who has the disposable income to see what they're like, and report back?

I don't think the market's actually saturated. The interest is growing every year in kilts of all sorts and there's room perhaps even for a few more.

    Way to go SportKilts!
From the pic, it looks like a decent solid coloured kilt for under a hundred bucks.
It may not have all the bells and whistles of a Utilikilt, Rkilt, or Amerikilt, but I think a lot of guys will jump at the price and get hooked on kilts at a very reasonable price. That's always been SportKilts' forté and it's good to see them moving up in quality.
The kilt business is growing beyond company niches and good on SportKilts for recognising this while keeping true to their roots.
    Nice job, Seamus!

It's really refreshing to hear kilt makers giving each other encouragement and compliments. It makes you realize they're really interested in the growth of kilts not just grabbing your money.

    Thanks guys

Even better is the encouragement the kiltmakers here give to guys who want to try making a kilt themselves. They're sure a great bunch of people.

For all of SportKilt's shortcomings as a kilt, here's a little story.

There was a big hiker festival last summer, with a lot of different vendor booths, mostly of backpacking gear. Sport Kilt had a booth, as did Amerikilt. Now we, of course, would think that Amerikilt has a much better-constructed product, in terms of quality and function. But Sport Kilt sold out completely, even selling the wrong size kilts to people who just wanted a kilt, no mattter what. Amerikilt sold about two kilts, and packed up and went home after the first day of the event. So to the average Joe, Sport Kilt has tartan material, so is a kilt. Sure, with more education they'd get to know what constitutes a real kilt, but it's a great entry kilt for those who want to just try on a kilt.

    Andrew.
