I need a new kilt
I have let myself be persuaded to buy a bordeaux/wine-coloured jacket & waistcoat.
But none of my kilts will go with these splendid new accoutrments.
I'm thinking the only safe tartan to accompany such a colour would be one of those grey-black tartans mentioned recently (or was it on another forum?).
I seem to remeber seeing a picture of one with a deep red line that might well match my jacket.
Does anyone know what these new tartans are called? -- and who makes them?
Martin, who hardly ever wears a jacket and is wondering why on earth he bought this one!

Martin,
An all-grey tartan would work so very well with a wine-coloured jacket and waistcoat. Add to those a grey shirt and hose with wine/maroon flashes and maybe a maroon tie if you're going that far, and you'll have perfection.
One of the tartans you may be remembering could be the 'Grey Thistle Dubh', a corporate tartan from Geoffrey (Tailor) in Edinburgh, which I love. I don't have a wine-coloured jacket, but I have worn this with a maroon tie, grey hose and maroon flashes to great effect.
If you should speak with Geoffrey (Tailor) (0131 557 0256 or enquiries@geoffreykilts.co.uk ), be sure to stress it is the Grey Thistle Dubh you are looking for. They are not yet publicising it and you may not find it on their website. Their standard corporate tartan is just 'Thistle Dubh' which is mainly purple - not what you want at all!
Here is a reasonable photo of my kilt:

Do you think that the MapleLeaf tartan might be a worthy candidate?

There are several version... this one has a blue undercheck.
Some day I will have a kilt made in the Maple Leaf tartan.
Good luck with your search!

Martin,
This might be the gray, black and red tartan you are looking for:

Wow, that tartan makes for an elegant kilt. Good suggestion.

Martin,
PM1 has a kilt in shades of Grey, I believe, but I don't remember what it is called. You might PM him or check his previous posts.
I have the Auld Lang Syne Grey mentioned above. It is a beautiful combination, but the red stripe may not go well with a bordeaux/maroon color.
There are a few pics at the link below.
Post some pics so we can see the colors, please.

Thank you all for your suggestions.
I, too; like the Maple Leaf, but don't feel that brown and wine go together (though of course I could wear it without the jacket -- but then I'll start having storage space problems!).
The old Lang Syne is tempting, but I'd prefer not to have heavyweight cloth.
The tartan I have in mind has not been mentioned. It must have been another forum. It was basically tha same as Hamish's with an additional line of red.

Found it !
Highland Granite (from Lochcarron) is another possibility, very like Hamish's Grey Thistle .
But what my subconscious had registered was actually called Balmoral Claret -- obviously just what I need for a wine-coloured jacket.
Is this available to mortals with no royal blood, however? that is the question.

I've not seen Highland Granite in the flesh... but photos of it look good. Certainly more economical than designing your own custom tartan. Another option I suppose.
