Looks like we will be making a family excursion to Easter Island in 2010 to see the solar eclipse. Not sure if we are flying or doing the cruise via the Panama Canal. Anybody ever been there? What were your impressions?
I worked there in the early 80s doing archaeological work and raising Moais. The director of the dig was Sergio Rapio. I believe he is still the Governor of the Island. My Brother and I did some fantastic hiking and exploring of the cliffs and volcano caldera. We were staying with a local family while we were there as there weren't any hotels etc. I lost my wallet while riding in the back of a truck going to a dig site and it was returned to me about ten years later by a park ranger who found it. It's a good trip to combine with a jaunt to the Galapagos too. O'Neille
I would love to do the Galapogos, but that would have to be another trip- my wife and I are not yet retired and even taking two weeks off is problematic. I would love to have a Moai in my front yard. Not sure my neighbors would like that.
I haven't been there, but it's on my list of places to go. Well, actually, everywhere is on my list, but Rapa Nui is on my top ten list.
