Newcomer in WNY
Greetings all,
I've actually been a member here for about a month, but this is the first chance I've had to post. I've been "scoping the territory," as it were, for a little while and I have decided it's time to introduce myself. My name is Joshua and I live in WNY, more specifically Southwestern NY near the PA border. The name of the dot on the map that I call my hometown is a little place called (no pun intended) Little Genesee. I'm actually on the town board, but that's a subject for a different place and time.
My obsession (as it's become) for my Scottish heritage has its roots many years ago. My maternal grandmother's maiden name is Scott (hence the username), and when I found out last year that you can trace your heritage by simply following family names, things really kicked into high gear. One thing lead to another, and after extensive research and many hours spent surfing the 'net I selected a set of plans and set out to make my own kilt last March. Ironically enough it was St. Patrick's Day. I’ve posted some pics and the details of the process in the DIY section.
I'm in my senior year at Alfred State earning a Bachelors in Electromechanical Engineering, so things have been a bit hectic the past few months. But Christmas break starts in a week, so I hope to have some more pics soon.
This was a "quicky" kilt to get the feel for kilt making in general and to find out what it's like wearing a kilt.
The rest, as the proverbial "they" say, is history. I don't wear my kilt full time at present. I have yet to go anywhere besides the house, mostly because I don’t have a sporran yet. I don’t feel comfortable in public without a sporran. And quite frankly I still don’t feel “natural” in a kilt yet as I’m still trying to get used to having to sweep my pleats before sitting and watching to make sure people don’t see more than they should. But with time and advice I hope to get past all that and join the braveheart ranks.
Well, thanks for reading my novel and I look forward to your posts and advice, as well as to posting my own adventures.

Welcome aboard cousin,
My mother's line is Scott too. Have a hand sewn 16 oz Strome in the same Scott tartan as your avatar, I love it.
My House of Gordon line comes from just up the road from you in Cuba and Rushford.

Greetings from just north of you in the Greater Buffalo-Niagara region.
There's a couple of Scotts in my family tree as well, but research shows they were Irish (there's a bad pun in there somewhere).
Welcome to the forum, and if we ever have another Buffalo Kilt Night, come on up and join us!
