Wore my kilt in public yesterday, first time.
Well, yesterday Lynn and I were childless and decided to have a day together just running around so I decided it'd be a great time to loose my kilted virginity. I thought being a Sunday and the temp was actually above zero for a change...why not.
Went with a casual look of boots and red cuffed, black rugby socks and a long sleeved black t-shirt. Not much different than the pics I posted the other week when it first arrived. I do need to find a shorter winter coat that works with the outfit though.
First stop, a little "greasy spoon" type diner for breakfast. Got a few stares and a grin or two, but other then that, it was pretty cool. Had one guy give me a thumbs up on our way out after we ate.
Next, on to the airport. Had to pick up a piece of luggage that was lost. The security guard speaking with the two ladies at the counter asked the normal questions. Then says, "hey, she wants to know...well, you know...what everyone asks". He's nodding his head toward the woman behind the counter who is all of 60+ years old and she turns a nice shade of crimson. I grinned and asked, "whatever do you mean? What question?" This was fun. He says flat out, "she wants to know if you're wearing anything underneath". I looked her square in the eye and said with a sideways grin, "well Ma'am, that would be my socks and boots". I think she about fell over. The 20 something chicky next to her was laughing at her co-worker's embarrassment. Lynn was enjoying it too I think. We walked away and the both were leaning out over the counter to watch. I haven't had this much fun in I don't know when. We retrieved the luggage and headed out to the car. Did I mention it was a windy day? We walk across the main drive and in front of a van load of people then down the aisle. Get about 30 meters past the van and Lynn happens to look behind me and "OH MY GOD RIKK" as she pats down the back of my kilt. I looked back at the van and the people in the front are clapping and laughing. I was pretty red this time.
Next we went to the mall to do some window shopping and buy an armload of books at the local booksellers. On the way in this older gent says to his mate. "It takes a hearty should to wear a kilt in this temperature, that is one tough fella." We all laughed. It wasn't that bad. Got a few stares and that was it. A very nice young lady that helped me find a new belt that matched the style perfectly asked a few questions, but never anything inappropriate. I did feel sort of smug walking into Victoria's Secret though and realizing I was the only man in there, let alone in a kilt. I noticed Lynn holding my hand alot more than normal as well.
All in all, it was a great day and the nervousness at the start was soon gone. I can't wait until the next time. Don't spend much time out between work and home. Work is out of the qustion. Probably dinner and the Flogging Molly concert in Detroit on March second.

Glad to hear you had a good first outing in your kilt. It's really a non event. I think most of our fears are between the ears. I haven't had a single negative comment yet. Welcome to the rabble from North Dakota.

Nice stories. Heavy winds and nice kilts almost always lead to a 'shining' moment!
"A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

Yeah, you've got to be careful there. And it's usually not the steady winds you have to look out for. It's those unexpected bursts between buildings and such.

Great story! As you've discovered, wearing a kilt is very comfortable and isn't the issue you first feared. Soon you'll be wearing it regularly.

Welcome. After a while it'll seem normal to wear the kilt.
